Never perfect I know, but my Dept has got a bee in it's administrative bonnet about 'streamlining' training. Instead of of our roughly monthly training days covering all the shooting and training competencies we are supposed to cover throught a training year, they are to be condensed and delivered in two, five day training blocks per year. e.g. mine will be the first week of April and the first week of October.
However, between these blocks we will recieve no other related training at all, and not fire a single round in training.

Similarly my Rifle training will be in two blocks, with nothing in between, The first one being September 2011.

I have reservations......................................

As would I.  I just recently changed the schedule at my agency from quarterly to monthly.  We'll be shooting a little less each time, but with more frequency.

I am a firm believer that shooting less volume with more frequency is a good thing.  That philosophy would certainly apply to many other training topics as well.
