This past weekend was the Big Sandy machine gun shoot in Wikieup AZ. It is the largest in the country. The firing line is 1500 feet long, and the range has targets set up out to 1200 yards.

We loaded up Thursday night to head up. Fortunately, my little brother has a toy hauler that we were able to use--it was his first shoot....

There was an M18 Tank Destroyer there, and I figured I'd share some pictures. Yes, the gun is live, and yes, they were shooting. After all--this is a shoot, not a gunshow!

There was also a 90mm gun up and running--very impressive

And they even used it to shoot a little tiny bit of tannerite. About 200 pounds or so of tannerite....

We also had a few aerial targets that we let the shooters viciously murder....

And some that we loaded with the rimfire mix from Gatling Guns.com--good folks by the way....

We put about a half dozen planes up with reactive onboard, but they only managed to hit one. Didn't get a pic of it, but trust me, it was shattered, scorched, folded, spindled, and mutilated...

A fine gentleman happened to have a flamethrower that he wanted to try to kill a plane with, so we wandered down to let him try. The plane survived, but flamethrowers are COOL!

(video)

And a fine gentleman allowed us to shoot his minigun. Miniguns make my pee-pee tingle.....

(and on video)

All in all, a fine weekend! To top it all off, as we were driving back in to town, the Blue Angels were flying. You can imagine the reaction to the Blue Angels flying 100 feet over head in a car loaded with airplane freaks. You guessed it, pandemonium--scrambling to find a fucking camera for the next pass. Unfortunately, no camera could be found, so you guys are just gonna have to trust me on this---4 F18's in close formation, 100 feet up, smoke on, is a seriously awesome end to an otherwise stellar weekend...

I'll have more pics up sometime soon.....

Airplane Chucker.

Edited to make the movies work...

Awesome pics.

I would imagine that there was the $200 a peice tax on the artillery rounds.

Your last pic looks like Special Ed trying to chase a plane.

Did you use the RC planes as a UAV for the aerial pictures?

I used an electric airplane to get the aerials. I seem to have a bent propshaft that's throwing a ton of vibration--out of about 400 pics, there are only about 90 that are as clear as I like, and they were all taken power off...

Easy fucker--that's me! It's kinda tough to get an airplane handlaunched in a confined space and not fall off the edge of the berm--there was live fire going on and I didn't want to fall down and get shot!
Link Posted: 10/23/2006 12:27:03 PM EST
tell me you got a photo of the 200lb tannerite bomb exploding!!!!
Link Posted: 10/23/2006 12:35:04 PM EST
Nope, unfortunately, my back was turned when they shot it. I can tell you that it shook the earth. It scared the shit outta me, because I thought we still had a few minutes before it went--I turned to go into the trailer to get a camera, and it sounded like someone tore a hole in the world.

I did recover enough to get the smoke cloud though....

and here's the barrel headed for its doom!

And a less retarded looking launch....

Tax only applies to the rounds if there's over a set amount of explosives (1/4oz?) in them, a solid chunk of lead would not be taxed.

The 90 was firing AP rounds. No tax needed for a giant armor piercing projectile...

That was a great shoot. I had such a blast out there but I had to get back home that same evening for a party for my kids. It only took us two hours from Henderson to the registration table so it wasn't a big deal.

Hopefully we will have our 02 SOT for the spring shoot and add to the firepower.

thanks,
Ron

Whats a drone like that cost?

Do people pay you for the chance to shoot at them or did you do it for free?

It looks like a hell of a shoot, when my Army days are over and I head back to AZ I will have to attend!

The planes cost about 120 to build and are purchased by the folks that run the shoot--we just fix 'em and fly 'em....

You charging for assembly?

2xservo, OS engine, gas, foam, etc. $120 is not bad.

Not sure how that's run--my buddy Kevin is the headman--I just wrench, fly and drink beer! He handles aquisitions.

We are going to coroblasters and durabats though. Easier to fix and they'll take a beating--our coroblaster burned in after a hit from a minigun at about 110. New fuel tank and servo and it was good as new (well, except for a few non-standard holes).

The worst part is that after flying in that particular environment, everything else seems a bit boring....

How about plans for the foam and cardboard planes!!

Now I'm really curious. What kinda red tape do you have to jump through to get the M18 with a live main gun?? (Not that I'll ever be able to afford one, but still..)

The NFA paperwork for a destructive device would be it.

I'm pretty sure that this is the one that David Uhrig had advertised on his webpage for $120K. I can't imagine that
there are too many Hellcats with live 76mm's floating around the milveh community.

Or not that I've heard of, and I keep an eye on the market, more out of curiosity than anything, since I sure wouldn't
be able to afford anything like that, short of winning the PowerBall or something.......

There's a bunch of off the shelf ones that can be built or purchased assembled pretty cheap.

rcgroups.com also has a lotta DIY people building foamies.

The guys that run the shoot figure between 2 and 3 and a half MILLION rounds go downrange in the 3 days of the shoot. The guy who owns the minigun I got to shoot was letting anyone who wanted to rip off a burst or two. A true gentleman.

BTW, if you ever have the opportunity to shoot a minigun, I highly recommend that you do so. Just be aware that it can cause giggling.

Not entirely sure where one acquires such items. But at 26lbs a piece, I'm sure the UPS man hates to deliver them!

(the brass is reused, but not sure where they get the projos...)
