Town Manager Calls For Change In Response To Police Actions

Event Organizers Want Apology From Town of Smithfield

Smithfield Town Manager Eric Williams tells WTSB he would like to see changes made after police shut down a peaceful 9-11 Patriots Day Rally on the steps of the Johnston County Courthouse Friday afternoon. Williams also voiced his displeasure with a comment made by a Smithfield police officer on Monday who stated, “Those tea baggers, they got what was coming.” Williams said, “It is not a comment that makes me very happy.”

Controversy still surrounds police action Friday where approximately 140 people had gathered on the courthouse steps to hold a 9-11 event. Two officers arrived 45 minutes after the Patriots Day rally started and told event organizer Berma Stemler it could not continue because she did not have a permit to use a public address (PA) system. In September 2008, police and town officials allowed a much larger and louder Anti-Sheriff Steve Bizzell rally on the same courthouse steps without a permit. That group never appeared before the Smithfield Town Council. Williams, who was not the Town Manager at the time, said he was not aware of the 2008 event not having a permit.

In July, Stemler appeared before the Smithfield Town Council and informed the Board of her intentions. On July 14, Stemler filed a Temporary Use Permit Application with Smithfield Planning Director Paul Embler, but was reportedly told by Embler the permit application was not needed. Days before the event, Stemler said she learned from Embler a permit was in fact needed but it was too late to receive Council approval. Williams told WTSB on Monday, “We need to change our procedures internally in how they are processed and enforced. We have a process that involves a particular office (planning), but in the field, it involves a different office (police). I want to change that. I don’t know how to change that, but I would like to see it changed.”

Interim Police Chief Bruce Gentry declined to tell WTSB who ordered the two officers to go to the event, but added, “We were told in advance (and) it was not a surprise.” Organizers of the rally have threatened a boycott of Smithfield businesses and have not ruled out litigation. So far, Stemler said no one from the Town of Smithfield has reached out to her to offer any type of apology. WTSB Photos

Typical liberals. They treat normal people the same way they used to treat blacks back before the civil rights movement got going good (remember, it was democrats who opposed blacks).

If WE can be as effective as the '60's black civil rights people were in the long run, we'll be doing good.

The fact that the socialists are resorting to this sort of crap should be seen as a _good_ sign, because it means they fear us and what we have to tell people.

We need to blow these people out of the water. Next year there should be a rally there that will pin their ears back (nice and loud).

I would like to see the officer's in question prosecuted for failing to uphold their oath. Any chance that happens?

What could he be charged with? There was obviously an ordinance in place requiring a permit that the organizer didn't have. You can't charge him for doing his job.

His comment about the "Teabaggers" is what will cost him his job, especially when the City Counsel starts to feel national heat (we can help ) over the incident. The officer will most certainly see the underside of the bus IMO.

Martin Luther King was a Republican. It makes sense when you think about it. Just about everyone I tell this to is shocked. People just assume he was a Democrat.

He was simply following orders.

That's right. The democrats only jumped onboard after the "war" had been won, because they figured out that they could use the situation for political gain. Slimy damn dems just never change. They don't really care about anything other than lining their own pockets and keeping anyone else from being able to compete with them in the business of "pocket lining".

MLK was a Republican, the Republicans freed the slaves and ended the rebellion, and Republicans did all the heavy lifting to make blacks equally human in the USA. The CRA of '64 may have been signed by Johnson, but it was originally Eisenhower (Republican) legislation that JOHNSON spoke out against at the time.

The ugly truth is the CRA being signed by a Democrat plus Democrats promising free shit is what got them black support and is what keeps it. That also destroyed black culture. Once upon a time they had a LOWER ratio of fatherless and delinquent children than whites. Now? Heh. The Democrats' best trick was realizing they could not only continue to oppress black people and twist black culture into the disgusting monster it is today, but ALSO get them to vote for it willingly.

Democrats are big government populist oppressors and have been since they got their start with Jackson (don't believe the lie that the modern Democratic Party is descended from Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans... that party split in two. The slavers became the Democrats, the men who would not see others in chains went to the Republicans) and started shitting on peaceful Indian tribes just because they could.

He never ADVOCATED illegal acts.

He merely made the observation that vigilante acts sometimes occur in this country.

I suppose a reference to the movie "The Jack Bull" is an incitement to illegal acts ?????

Or the book "The Ballad of Carl Drega" ?

"Open Range" ?

Will referencing 'Death Wish" bring the ban hammer ?

Looking for that info now, Smithfield NC isn't it.

ETA: Actually, it is but they still have the old town manager listed. Must be somebody's nephew maintaining the web page, they hired the new town manager back in March.

From the looks of the crime on that page, maybe the Smithfield police should be worrying about real criminals and not peaceful protesters exercising their right to assembly and free speech.
Sounds like that town has some big issues to resolve.

Peaceful protesters are a soft target. Real criminals might actually cause them injury.
