I'm looking to buy a laptop. Would I be better off with a Toshiba, Sony or HP?
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 6:50:27 PM EDT
Sony would be the best, but tend to be more expensive. I don't like HP computers because they load so much crap on them that it bogs them down. I have a toshiba myself.

Toshiba. I'm typing on my 2 year old one now.
No complaints with it.
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 6:58:34 PM EDT
Toshiba, we have 3 of them, never had a problem.
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:01:22 PM EDT
My Toshiba works fine
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:02:45 PM EDT
Toshiba Satellite from a mega-chain store here....$550 OTD and it works fine.
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:09:10 PM EDT
Fuck Toshiba!!! It's because of that dman thing (satellite A15) that I am currently typing from the 24 hour computer lab during finals week. My Toshiba is a little under 4 years old and I have had nothing but problems, ovrheating being a huge one, now the damn CPU runs at 100% constantly and this is after I formatted it. I am buying a desktop as soon as my broke ass can afford one as thats what my Toshiba has been like since a little after the 1st yer I bought it.

IBM
Sony sucks

Snafu 12, why do you hate sony?
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:32:09 PM EDT
Toshiba is definitely anti-gun and anti-defense....HP is anti I think, and although Sony probably is, I don't think they ever stressed it....but I could be wrong
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:33:04 PM EDT
sony vaio first (before all others, not just this list)
Then toshiba
then HP

Panasonic Toughbook

Seriously though, I work on all major brands of laptops(Dell, HP, IBM, Toshiba being the 4 most common) and not one of them is any better than the other it seems. To me , they all suck. I was just impressed with the Panasonic as it is built to last. The rest are decent if you only use them for an hour or two a day.

Most common prob I see everyday are

Dell, crappy chargers and weak batteries, fairly decent construction though
IBM, LCDs and video converters blow, keys pop off, body gets loose
HP, keys pop off and the unit is pretty weak, hinges break often
Toshiba, their HDDs are teh suck and their batteries die quick and their chargers suck, devcent construction

Like I said, spend the extra dough and dont cheap out on a laptop that may be part of your life and income. All thos companies make good units and they make turds. You get what you pay for.

Toshibas have not been very reliable in my company.... at all.

HP's are total crap.

Sony's are good, but expensive... I have never been that awful impressed.

My number one choice in laptops is IBM. I would never own an IBM desktop or (wintel) server, however.

My number two would be a Dell.

I have been looking into an IBM to replace my toshiba.
Link Posted: 12/16/2005 7:40:55 PM EDT
My sony desk top is a P.O.S. My Toshiba Laptop with Tru-Bright display has been outstanding - one year and going strong. Great machine, wide screen.

Toshiba

Mine's bulletproof. Been to Iraq twice. Worked from -60 F to 135+ F. Worked mobile in my truck. Works great! In 3 years, the only thing ot crap out was a HDD.

Toshiba Satellite in my opinion buddy! I love the Sony laptops but you're really gonna pay for them. I bought my first Toshiba a year and a half ago. I bought my wife another Toshiba within 9 months. They're great.

She has the Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 - Laptop

Toshiba has refurbished models for $946.00 right now under FULL warranty! I bought it for $1200 just a few months ago. That's a great deal. Buy this model with confidence. It's a GREAT computer. It's better than the one I bought myself the first time! But my wife gets the best tech stuff and I get the best gun stuff! Gotta keep her happy with her toys so I can keep buying mine! My .02!

To everyone who said IBM:

IBM does not make laptops anymore, they sold their PC business off to the chicoms a while back.

EDIT: I'd also agree with the toughbook reccomendation, if the toughbooks weren't so much more expensive.

Sony, IBM Thinkpad, and Toshiba. These were the ones that I heard the best about in 3 years of computer software phone support.
Link Posted: 12/17/2005 12:01:51 AM EDT
Id get the Sony if I had the money.
Link Posted: 12/17/2005 12:55:00 AM EDT
IBM Thinkpad. If not, then Toshiba. If not, then pick one at random.

Dude what about a Dell?

Whatever you buy, DO NOT turn it upside down while it's turned on!!! I killed my new one that way and also learned in the process that laptops suck, get a desktop.

I've got news for you, Dell is one of the worst products on the market. They are constantly losing PSU's and motherboards.

I've done the whole PC support thing to and I rate Dell right there with Compaq and Packard Bell.

Turning it upside down should not do anything. I do it all dau while having to get the product key off the back while calling Microsoft. I would say at least 5 x a day.

As far as get a desktop over a laptop? Kind of hard to tote a desktop everywhere though most people who buy laptops just put them on their desk and dont go anywher with them.

I'm typing from a 1999 Toshiba. The one thing that sucked and caused me TONS of grief was WinBlows ME. After my wife got frustrated with it and urged me to buy a new one ( A Gateway), I reformatted it to NTFS and installed XP on the Toshiba. Since then, it doesn't run too badly at all. It gets a little slow when warm, but that's to be expected. It's a one GHz Celeron, I upgraded the RAM to 512 Meg. 6 Years and still going, not one major hardware glitch. Thank GOD that Windoze ME is finally DEAD !!!

The Gateway laptop is a 2.8 Ghz, 1 GB RAM and 100 GB Harddrive with a dvd burner.

Toshiba sold equipment and designs associated with manufacturing submarine propellers to the Soviets during the cold war.

From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toshiba:

In 1987, the company was accused of illegally selling CNC milling machines used to produce very quiet submarine propellers to the Soviet Union in violation of the CoCom agreement. The incident put a strain on relations between the United States and Japan and resulted in the arrest and prosecution of two senior executives, as well as the imposition of sanctions on the company by both countries.

I just bought a Toshiba Tecra S2 from Newegg, I have owned several Tecra 8000's and a Dell. I use an IBM/Lenova T42 at work.

I would suggest the Tecra S2/S3/M2/M3 or a T42/43 IBM.

Link Posted: 12/17/2005 7:40:04 PM EDT
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I went and actually looked at the laptops today to get a feel for them. The Toshiba's and the Sony's were by far the best as screen and performance. After looking at them side by side I finally decided on the Sony. The keyboard feels great and the construction feels solid. I'm typing from it now.

i had a toshiba, and now have a HP. I liked em both, but tend to like the HP more.
