In Michigan, you have to register any firearm that the length is under 30” as a pistol.  I have just completed a Polish Underfolder AK47 kit and took it down to the cop shop for a “MI safety inspection”.

Here’s how it went:

First of all the clerk did not have a clue how to do it.  I gave her a print out of the MI law that I had printed out from the internet.  She started reading my stuff, which, as you can imagine, is very long.  A cop walked by, looked at my rifle , and said it was illegal since it had a Bayonet lug on it.  I told him nicely that the AWB bad sunset on Sept 14 and that this was a configuration that was now allowed.  He then went on his way mumbling something under his breath that I did not hear thru the Bullet proof glass.  The clerk was still reading the documentation.  The next cop walks up and started finger fucking my rifle and asks me point blank if its “full auto”.  I told him “no, it’s not, those are still regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934, and thus not legal without jumping thru a bunch of hoops.  I added that there are (5) U.S. made parts inside to comply with federal regulation 922r”.  He then said the only time he seen one of these was when “getting shot at”.  I said to him, “come on now”, in a don’t give me this bullshit tone, “people around here don’t shoot at your guys with AK-47’s”, and he laughed it off with a sheepish grin.  I then said, “it would be pretty silly to bring an illegal weapon down here to the cop shop to get registered, now would’nt it?” He then walked away.

Man, when will they learn that the laws only apply to the law abiding people and that the criminal element ignores them.

At least I have a Polish under folder registered as a pistol here in MI.  That means I can carry it under my CCW.  I guess that 30 Rds. of 7.62x39 ends the 45ACP vs. 9MM which is better debate [:0]

What was the total cost for registering it, and do they still take a thumbprint?  Its it still a triplicate form, one for you, one for the county, and one for the state?

Canton MI, 1991.  I took my CZ85 to the local PD to get the inspection.  The inspecting officer kept playing with the safety to get it to decock.  Finally he asked me how to decock it.  He looked at me like I had a horn growing out of my head when I told him to put his thumb on the hammer, pull the trigger, and ride the hammer forward.

Zero, nada, zilch.  It was a FREEBIE from the the county

No thumbprint, I did sign triplicate forms. It was actually easy after she read the stuff.

Echap,

I am glad that you posted, I am getting ready to assemble un underfolder and was wondering about the registration part.  Did they give you any trouble since you built it?  I would like to get an AK pistol just to take it in for the "safety inspection".  The one moron that does most of the registration here is a total  idoit.  He keeps his finger on the trigger and points the weapon at everyone and their brother in the room.  Last time I went in with a revolver, I opened the gate to show him that it was empty.  I closed the cylinder and handed it to him.  He fumbled around with it and asked me how to open the cylinder.  Then he became real indigent when he asked where the safety was and I told him it didn't have one, the person carrying it was the safety.

Oops...sorry Dozer. Couldn't resist.

Nice looking rig. Seriously. I like the two tone look.

Good looking "pistol" you have there too echap. That would make a hell of a concealed carry outfit.

Here in Colorado we have "Concealed Pistol Permits". And rifles under 30" are still rifles. So handguns are all we get to carry. I think a mini-CAR would be cool.
