I gave my grandson Andrew a Browning Lever Action .22 for his first birthday. Sometimes when he comes over, he asks me to get it out of the safe so he can look at it. Recently he told me that he was ready to go shooting, as he "was almost 8 years old".

So today I picked him up from school and we went to the range. I gave him a safety talk on the way, and he assured me that he knew the "Most Important Rule About Guns: Never point a gun at anyone."

We got to the range and set up a target for him, put on our safety equipment, and I showed him how to aim the rifle. He is too small to properly shoulder the rifle, so I showed him how to put it under his arm and aim.

Here he is in action.

He sure was proud of his rifle.

He wanted a picture to show his Mom and Dad his target. Not too bad for the first time shooting.

I also brought a single action .22 pistol for him to try.

He liked it as he said it was "like the cowboys use".

As I was picking up the target and equipment, he started collecting some range brass. I asked him what he was doing and he said, "I'm starting a collection. I'm going to get one of every kind."

I told him he was off to a good start.

On the ride back home, he asked if we could go shooting again. I told him, "Sure".

He said, "How about next week?"

I think the boy is hooked.
