Anyone have, or for that matter, ever seen a tokay gecko before? In their native Philippines, they're known as tuko.

They originate from all around Southeast Asia, and have been introduced into FL, TX and are considered invasive pests here. Over there, they have a fairly good reputation as pest control and most people like them, although they keep their distance from these fascinating animals. My cousin just got two of them. They are able to climb just about anything, even glass. They can also walk on ceilings. Tukos can run amazingly fast and are also adept swimmers. Somewhat amusingly, they are vicious, angry little lizards, reminiscent of a cross between a snake and an alligator. They eat insects and small animals such as mice. Tukos bark when you startle them, and they will attack you. They don't really have teeth, so they can't do a lot of damage but they can draw blood, and they do not like to let go of you.

On to the pictures:

This one we believe is a male, still in the box from the pet store:

A close up view:

Hiding (with bonus optical illusion!)

Threat display:

We believe this one is female, as it's a little smaller and a bit more friendly:

Together:

Detail of the female's foot:

Big smile:

You can get an idea of their size (still juvenile) from this pic:

Here's a good threat display from the male:

They are a bit high strung when you first pick them up, but after a while they relax

That's all for now. I hope you enjoy the pictures and information about these interesting little critters!

it hurts when they latch onto your pinky
my leopard and fat-tail geckos were so much friendlier

pics were taken in the late 80's and scanned

Awesome, they look pretty damn cool. I wonder how they'd do against fire ants...hmm...

Those were some good quality pictures btw, no bullshit.

Impressive. I see a lot of geckos in HK but I've never seen any that colorful or that large. Usually they are kind of dull, pale brown color and about half the size of those guys, and they are pretty passive.

Thanks!

Camera used was a Nikon D90, lens for most of these was a 50mm F/1.8 on a 2x teleconverter. A 18-105 kit lens may have been used for some of these. Lighting was provided by a SB600 flash off camera, bounced and diffused off of various surfaces for effect. Check the exif for more information.

My cousin has been bit who knows how many times. I've only been tagged once, and that was after taking these pictures. I was holding the female and she was all calm and relaxed. I handed her to my cousin, and she whipped around and nipped my finger. I guess she doesn't like him and was complaining to me about it.

Once I heard that they "gleefuly bite the hand that feeds them", I decided they just aren't for me.

Cool critters, though.  As long as they don't seek my digets out, they'de be welcome to nom on any insects and/or rodents around. And provide the felines with a worthy adversary.

My roommate had a pair of tokays when I was in the Army. They kept a Nile Monitor 12 times their size cowering in the corner.  What they did to pinky mice was something worthy of Jurassic Park.

I had some leopard gekkos.  Had them for 2 months and then took them to my parents house while I went on vacation. When I had them they were black. Apparently right after I dropped them off they molted and ate the old skin. Their new color was greenish yellow. They got super mean and died about a month later. I was only gone 2 or 3 days.  Not sure what happened.

I've had a couple of Tokay's. They were pretty mean. One day I was playing with a pet ball python by their cage and they took off running so fast they smacked into the cage glass. It was pretty funny to see the bully lizards turn tail (sorry for the pun) and run. Guess I found out who rules the jungle.
