I have a Imperial War 9mm P08 Lugar made in 1917. My Great Grandfather captured it in France in 1918. It was passed on to my by my Grandfather and when I came back from USAR training he gave it to me. This evening my oldest Nephew is coming over to help me move something. He is only going to move this pistol. He shoots, he hunts and next month he graduates from College. It's is his graduation gift. I have no sons and I want it to stay with a male of the family. I know he will take good care of it and when time pass it on to someone who is worthy of this piece of family history.

Very cool. Might want to write-up a little history to go with it so names and dates don't get lost in time.

A short note explaining your reason for choosing him and your hope for the gun's continued travels might be nice.
It could be kept with the gun and signed by each family member that passes it on. |

Go for you to pass it on. I have my grandfathers 1915 Luger that he brought back from WWII, looks brand new and in holster with an extra mag. Holster still has my grandfathers name and serial # on a tag attached. I also have the bring back papers for a captured nazi flag and German rifle . With the bring back papers was the flag but instead of a German Mauser I was expecting it was a remington made 1903 Springfield . Don't know how that happened .

You're a generous Uncle!
PICTURE of the pistol PLEASE! You know the rules!!! |

Uncle? is that you?
I hope your nephew appreciates the gift. |

Write up a note stating that your GGGF captured it. Notarize it. It stays with the P-08.

You need to think this through a bit more. I think you're going to make a mistake.
He's coming out of college with...? No job? No money? No way to store it? No way to secure it? You're placing your gun in an uncertain situation that ends often in upset. Write a quick will with your letter, intentions, family heritage, etc. and hold on to it until his situation is stable. If I'm wrong, so be it - glad I am.

Thought you said you sold all your guns when you got married.

Make sure he has a safe and a security system or me might not have it long.
I gave an expensive rifle to one of my step sons and he didn't have it for a year before it was stolen from his apartment. Most likely one of his friends or maybe his ex girlfriend. I have no doubt they pawned it for $100 because I'm sure they don't realize it's worth $1200.

For me, when it's time to pass along my guns I have two sons.
