I see that all the time around Phoenix.

Lots of Sheriff's deputies here carry 1911s and Peoria (a major suburb of Phoenix) issues its officers a kick-ass SIG tactical 1911.

hell,i had swat show up at my house looking for a previous owner a couple weeks ago.the swat boss had a 1911 with pearl grips on his side!!

Got me thinking. The last time I recall seing police/security guards carrying revolvers was the early 90's.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:23:19 PM EST
I saw a Philly cop carrying a revolver about 2 weeks ago.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:23:33 PM EST
Funny, I saw a Deputy at Racetrack gas station carrying a custom 1911 today also. First time I've seen one as dept issues G-21's.

I saw a security guard with a wheelgun just the other day.

A revolver isn't necessarily a bad weapon for people who can use them well. (I'm not one of those people, but they are out there.)

Chief of Police here in town carries his personal 1911.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:26:20 PM EST
i know of some in georgia that carry them

Great choice.

Did he blade at .45?
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:36:17 PM EST
It's not all that uncommon to see smaller department officers around here with 1911s. Not a lot of them, but I've seen a few. Used to eat in a restaurant around Decatur where some Texas Rangers would show up, and a couple of them carried some good looking ones.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:37:00 PM EST
LEO ( or anybody else for that matter ) should carry whatever sidearm he/she is proficient with.
1911 is a viable platform for any person that's capable of running it.
So is a .357 revolver with a 4" barrel.

Not everybody needs 17 rounds of 9mm

I saw two Bowling Green LEOs carrying 1911s a few years back at the FXBG gunshow.

My local PD carries Kimber 1911s as standard. They replaced Beretta 96s several years ago.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:40:15 PM EST
I don't think I have ever seen a cop carry a 1911.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:40:19 PM EST
Several CO county sheriffs carry them; saw them at the state house last year.

Yuma County Sheriff's also carry 1911.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:53:53 PM EST
Local Sheriff carries a polished 1911 with mother of pearl grips. It is a bit of a BBQ gun. I have also seen him at the local gun shows (not his county) BSing with people.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:53:56 PM EST
It also depends on what their department allows them to carry
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:55:11 PM EST
That poor bastard

Did you at least give him a few bucks so he could get something to eat today?

My Father carried a 1911 once, but then he got a job.

Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:55:35 PM EST
Our county sheriff still carries a big ass S&W .357
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:55:42 PM EST
Not that uncommon around here, especially for county sheriff departments outside metro areas.

The security guard down at the Brookshires grocery store carries a judge. I'm praying it's at least loaded with 45's.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 8:56:44 PM EST
I carried one for years until the first Glock came out. Never went back. No hate on the 1911 though.

Guards at USDA HQ carry what I swear are 686s.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:01:21 PM EST
Anaheim PD carries (or at least authorizes them) them or did, years ago saw them on bike patrol outside Disney Land. One guy had a 5" stainless and I hope he made someone wet themselves by just the sight of it.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:02:57 PM EST
I know a deputy that does, at least he always is when I see him in plain clothes after he gets off duty. Never seen him in uniform.

Downtown Chicago still has plenty of CPD and Crook Cook County Deputies carrying revolvers....

I even saw ammo dump pouches on some officers belts....

One of our reserve officers used to carry a Colt 1911, complete with plastic grips. I asked him why he chose that sidearm, and he says, "Because the Colt 45 is the best handgun in the world." I just walked away.

Most of the old timers at CPD carry revolvers. Take a look at the guys at ORD or MDW, and you'll see what I mean.

My buddy is an "old timer" and carries a wheelgun. He's been in several shoot outs, and "won" them all. He said, "I don't need 15 rounds, when I can kill you just as easily with 5."

There was a episode of COPS where a CA officer was running some sort of fancy one.

That's what I thought

I've seen a lot of them, why not most people can shoot them better then anything else ... I'll stick wivt my 400 dollar glock but I know 1911s are super popular with cops right now ... What's not to like 10+1 of .45 ACP , 5" barrel easy to shoot, manual safety not a bad choice if you can pay 1k

I'd feel comfotable with a 1911. The only thing I see as bad is the capacity and reloading. Why he wouldn't carry a G21 is beyond me since bad guys have capability of more rounds etc, just me but again I wouldn't feel under gunned with a 1911
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:19:38 PM EST
I've seen Rangers, Williamson County and APD SWAT with 1911s and in Houston a HPD supervisor with a revolver.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:20:25 PM EST
Local deputies here pretty much carry whatever they want. Department issue is G22 but I see lots of 1911, Sig, and even the occasional revolver.

There is a constable a few counties over that carries a S&W 629.
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:20:41 PM EST
Been carrying one for years
Link Posted: 10/4/2014 9:24:03 PM EST
I actually started getting interested in firearms when I noticed the cop in front of me in line at McDonalds one day had the hammer back on what I later figured out was a 1911. This was many moons ago.
