I have a 2002 Dodge CTD Quad Cab 2500 with 5 speed that needs new tires. I would like to go larger than the 265/75 tires that were stock. I am strongly considering 255/85 tires but I am not sure if a tire with load range D is ok for this vehicle. Should I stick with tires in the load range E category even if I never tow anything? I am considering either the Toyo M55 255/85 or the Les Schwab SXT 255/85 tires.

I appreciate the advice!!

What is the max weight rating per load range D tire?  What's the trucks gross weight?  Gonna recalibrate teh speedo when you're done?

D rated tires are about 3000 # weight rating, my truck weights 7,000#, I will not recallibrate the speedo when done. My prior truck had 255/85/r16 tires and I just knew that my speedo was a certain % underestimating my actual speed. I usually set my cruise for 60 and the various mobile radar/spped indicators that the state police set up showed 68.

Edited to Add: My current gears are 3:55. Will 33" tires actually decresae my fuel efficiency (too much overdrive)?? The other tire size that I have considered is 285/75/r16 (available in load range E)..........

By my math, you should be fine.  Plus, you understand teh speedo diffence, so you should be good to go, barring one thing.  Who's putting them on, and will they install a lower load range? (eg., some places won't put S rated, or even H rated tires on a car that came with Z or V rated tires)

I have a 90 chevy 1500 that came with 245/75/16's.  I put 165's on it and have regretted it ever since.  Milage went down about 2mpg, and it is no where near as peppy.  I went with the e range just for durability, I drive alot of dirt roads etc.  My truck is probably not as powerful as yours so it might not make much of a difference.  I amsl noticed that the ride is a little more jarring.  It had e rated goodyears on it before.

I do not know anything about the brands.
