Does anyone do this? I just picked up a Greek salad with chicken souvlaki from my local Greek Restaurant and I got a funny look from the hostess/waitress when I left the tip portion of the credit card receipt blank. Am I wrong here?
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:31:08 AM EST
No.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:32:23 AM EST
Personal choice, if you want to, do it. I personaly don't as I feel a tip is for srvice and there is not a lot of service in running my CC and handing me a bag.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:33:03 AM EST
Wtf No.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:34:19 AM EST
I don't tip for takeout. The tip is for the added service of waiting on me.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:34:23 AM EST
I personally do not tip for take-out. I know some people do, but I don't think I OWE a tip to anyone until they earn it via good service.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:35:16 AM EST
ok, so what if you are a regular customer?
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:36:57 AM EST
I usually tip a couple bucks, but not a percentage of the bill.

No. I don't tip there either.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:39:44 AM EST
I tip if i'm being waited on, but not if I take out. Thats just stupid
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:40:43 AM EST
I used to work at a Restaurant. I only tip take out if:

1) its a Friday or Saturday night and they're busy AND
2) There isn't a dedicated "take out" worker doing it for me. When the bartender had to take care of the bar AND do take-out, it was hell for him. AND
3) My order is prepared correctly and on time. AND THEN
4) its 10%.

If 1, 2, or 3 isn't there - no tip. Because then, take-out isn't the same as serving a table, not by a long shot.

Fuck no, I don't tip for takeout.

To each their own...
Yes, I tip on take out orders.
Not as much as if I were at a sit down restaurant, but imo - I didn't spend the time preparing the meal so I'm leaving a tip for whoever did.
My convenience of not having to spend time cooking is worth a small tip to the guy that did....
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:57:33 AM EST
fork over the dollar, ya cheap prick

Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:58:22 AM EST
I tip about 4-5 bucks at my favorite BBQ place when I get takeout. My order is close to $30....

Depends on the place really...
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:58:47 AM EST
Not on take out orders.

Link Posted: 6/3/2008 6:59:41 AM EST
Do you tip at McDonalds? Nuff said.

Same here, if they have a jar out.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:02:41 AM EST
Absolutely Not

I'm not dropping a single penny for someone to carry my food from the kitchen to a counter.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:06:40 AM EST
If she's looking for a tip ask her what service she provided to justify it.

Ask her if she tips at the McDonalds drive through, too.

You were right in not tipping.

I only tip for food that is brought to me, be it at a restaurant or delivery service. If I have to get it myself, what am I tipping for?
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:15:45 AM EST
No tipping on take-out.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:16:12 AM EST
Nope - I'm picking it up, all they did is box it up.

All of your tips are belong to me!
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:18:35 AM EST
Not if I have to walk in and get it. I usually give a buck for curbside pickup.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:20:01 AM EST
Tip $1 for takeout
ymmv

"Don't spit in that cop's souvlaki"

"Would you like anything to drink with that?"

If I'm paying cash at one of my regular stops, I'll drop a buck or two in the tip jar, but not if I'm paying with plastic.

buck or two depending on the size of the order.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:35:48 AM EST
If it's a joint that I regularly frequent I sometimes toss a buck in for a tip on occasion if I feel compelled to do so.

My local terryaki place is superb and whips up custom to go orders for us at times so I have no problem tipping the occasional buck to them from time to time.

If it's a one time deal and you are not a regular customer .... I say no tip. If you are a regular and want to stay in good with the staff / owners ... a well timed tip and a friendly attitude does wonders to ensure future satisfaction
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 7:36:01 AM EST
I'm doing all the work on a take-out order. I've always wondered why there is no tip jar for the cook.

maybe, the last time I did a phone in pick-up aty a real restaurant, they had a waitress doing only car service. She asked and brought free drinks, she got a tip. T he cashier who puts boxes in a bag? no.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 12:21:46 PM EST
Sometimes.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 12:24:47 PM EST
Nope.

I made an exception once, but that kid spent about 10 minutes on the phone with me going over changes in the menu that might have an impact on my order.

As a rule NO, not for takeout. For curbside delivery, a couple bucks to 5%-10%
depending on order size. Place you go to alot & pick-up inside & it is the same
person usually & they are a waitress or bartender (not just cashier), I might tip
occasionally few bucks in cash....but If I eat in there also, then I just tip then.
When I eat in a restaurant & the service is good...20%, if it is just passable, then
usually 15%. VERY rarely if it totally sucked & the server didn't give a shit, then
I would say something and MAYBE leave 10%. If they are new and trying...
cut them some slack, 15%.
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 1:17:03 PM EST
No. The few tips I do give are to someone who delivers to me. The local pizza place used to deliver out to 100 yards from my driveway. So, I had to go get it anyhow, so fuck it, they don't get a tip, either.

My rules for tipping.

If you go inside and order at the counter $0
Delivery ( Depending on the size of my order) $2- 5
Restaraunt if the services is good ( may go up to 20% if services was stellar or the waitress was a good flirt) 10% -20 %

Curb side I guess a $1 but Ive never been to a place that does curbside this is NYC.

ETA :Once made an exception for a order I made at the counter. She busted her ass off filling my order. And I was trying to get her number. . She was 16 I was 17 ( raging teen hormones are not friendly on the wallet ) $10

ETA 2: The order was worth $90 and yes I got her number

A $0.99 Snacker from KFC
Link Posted: 6/3/2008 1:33:44 PM EST
Not for takeout... No service, no tip. I tip well when I am served though. If I get bad service I tip below 15% but above 10%. If I get horrible service, no tip. Have only done that once.
