Our POS RCA took a crap for the second time.  8-year old console TV.  I was against fixing it when it went out last year, but the wife wanted to because it matched the stereo cabinet and speakers.  Pisses me off, though.  I've got a cheap 19-inch Goldstar that is 20 years old and has been moved I don't know how many times, and works flawlessly, but an expensive RCA won't last more than 8?  And has never been moved around except for cleaning?

Anyway, who makes a reliable set nowadays?  And I was getting ready to send in my order to Aimsurplus for some C&R toys! Damnitall!

dude 8 years? man i would be happy with 8 years on tv today. 6-7 i think is just about expected lifespan these days, that way you end up spending more money. but TV's are relativaley cheap now.

I'd suggest you take the wife to a Circuit City or Best Buy type of place and look at the different types of sets and see if you can agree to a style.  ie, Set on a stand, plasma on wall, large LCD projection, wide screen or conventional, etc.  Then research brands and prices.

I prefer Sony but  YMMV.

They haven't even made console TVs for about 15 years....

Crap.  So you're telling me that I bought a 7-year old TV as brand new 8 years ago? Didn't you read my login name??

Check out Consumer Reports for the bar graph on reliability of various brands at your local library.  Some brands are vastly overrated.

RCA was one of the last to make them.  You could still buy this certain style up to a few years ago.  Wood cabinet around it, speaker sandwiched in the middle, and storage with glass doors across the bottom.  About ... 4' high total?  Oh well, looks like I'll be in for anywhere from $400 on up.

My mother had an RCA console.  If she still had it, it would be about 11 years old.  About 6 months ago, something went wrong in the video amp and I urged her to just replace it.

Actually, it was a really nice set.  Beautiful wood cabinet.

I would not hesitate to recommend a SAMSUNG unit over almost any other brand.   Particularly if you are going to spring for an HD set, which to me is the only REASONABLE way to go these days.    Buy a non-HD set and it will be obsolete before it dies.

Fortunately, you really can't go wrong with any top brand today.   They're all pretty darned good.   But a top brand is NOT LG or RCA or Magnavox or the little brands you haven't heard much about.

Sony, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba....you can't go wrong with these.

Our sony tv has a bad audio amp, it replaced another sony tv that lasted only 5 or 6 years.

Two expensive sony vcr's died on us during the past 10 years.

The sony tv bought about 1979 lasted about 25 years, but the recent ones have not lasted very well.

There was a time when sony's picture was a lot better than other brands but the others have closed the gap and almost eliminated it.

At present we are thinking one of those wide, flat HD tv's for the next one.
