I watched Outlaw Josey Wales tonight and then I read the thread about cloning. Well then I thought science fiction and my mind drifted to time travel. Sooo, I figured I'd ask.

If you could go back in time with all your guns and tactical gear, where would you go and who would you Fudge up!

(PS. There was a movie awhile back where a guy stops a stage coach and opens up on em with two MAC 10's I believe. (or uzi's) - what movie was that?)

The stage coach robbery was in "time Cop" with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

I'd go to France in The Great War and make sure an extra cannister of gas got into Hitler's trench.....

Back to the Alamo w/loads of evil black rifles!  Crockett and Bowie get to experience the joys of a 30 rd mag!

I thought briefly of Little Big Horn...but nah, Custer deserved to get smoked.

I used to fantasize in grade school about going back in time to the civil war and giving 10,000 M-16s and 1,000 M-60s to the South (with millions of rounds of ammo of course).

The SR-71 was a surveillance plane, i.e. no guns.  The A-12 was a "fighter" version that was armed with guided missiles, but it proved to be less than satisfactory (there can be problems when the launching platform of a missile is actually faster than the missile is).

What I would do?  Not a damn thing.  You guys need to watch the three part documentary on time travel called Back to the Future.  Time travel and meddling in the past caused all kinds of problems, and these guys were just self-interested twirps.  If you killed Hitler, or stopped the Civil War, America could be very different (possibly in a good way, or in a VERY bad way).  You need to bone up on this stuff guys.

Why?  We won anyway.  Just think of how unbelievably spoiled and ingrateful we'd be now if winning the Revolution was a turkey shoot like the Gulf War.  The people would have forgotten the immense suffering and pain Americans went through to cast off the shackles of colonial oppression and create the first truly free nation far more quickly and become listless and uncaring sooner than they did.  Imagine what our nation would be like if people were questioning the Founders' motives 50 or 100 years ago, instead of just in the last 20 years.  Imagine the socialistic, anti-American shithole this nation would've become.

Easy wins = Easy losses.

Thats tough to say. Guns alone dont decide history, if I could impliment modern telecommunications too? Now thats something different.

How different the world would be today if the Romans had undergone the industrial revolution a couple of hundred years after the birth of Christ. The technology and the information was there, they were at the same place technologicaly that Europe was at coming out of the Dark Ages...there is no Pre-Gunpowder nation or group of nations that could have beaten Rome at its height. Imagine the Industrial Revolution coming about in the third century instead of the ninteenth?

To make a truely impressive impact I'd take back a full expiditionary force to the first or second century AD. With us I'd bring a scientific library as well as individuals with basic know-how and skills with modern resource harvesting, chemistry, metulargy, physics, and earth sciences. With in a hundred years you could have electricity in every home, automobiles, aviation, navigation. With in a hundred and fifty, space-flight, the internet, modern chemistry and physics....

But...I'd only go back to introduce the information to everyone. That is only go back and introduce it to every major civilization around at the time. And I'd do my damndest to see that fissive nuclear physics never got off the ground, implement the widespread teaching of democracy and modern political theory, and environmental studies.

Think of a world with no 'third world' ? Where the standard of living everywhere is like the US or Western Europe? Where the environment is clean and well cared for ? (imagine hunting well managed heards of elephant, or buffalo in their natural environment ?) Where spaceflight has been around for a millenia ? Where all the children of the earth grow up with the knowledge of what it is to be truely free ? A full mind, a full belly, and the means to stand up for themselves both with ideals and with arms for what they believe ?

Knowledge is what I'd take back.

Funny, for a long time I've always thought it would rock to take a bunch of M-14s and some M-60s , with an appropriate shitload of ammo, back to the Alamo.

I think I'd just go back to the writing of the Bill of Rights and tell the founders they need to rethink the wording of some of the amendments.

Quoted:
How the conditions for satisfaction are to be brought about is the task of the second system, the ego, which is the domain of such functions as perception, thinking, and motor control that can accurately assess environmental conditions. In order to fulfill its function of adaptation, or reality testing, the ego must be capable of enforcing the postponement of satisfaction of the instinctual impulses originating in the id. To defend itself against unacceptable impulses, the ego develops specific psychic means, known as defense mechanisms. These include repression, the exclusion of impulses from conscious awareness; [red]projection, the process of ascribing to others one's own unacknowledged desires[/red]; and reaction formation, the establishment of a pattern of behavior directly opposed to a strong unconscious need. Such defense mechanisms are put into operation whenever anxiety signals a danger that the original unacceptable impulses may reemerge.

Umm.... Yeah, not.  I made a couple simple observations and you pull that out of your ass?  Whatever.

Things people received without much strife (easy wins) are very quickly taken for granted (easy losses).  If we hadn't bled for our freedom, do you honestly believe we'd be where we are today?  Look at Canada or Australia.  Hell, look at this nation.  America has become so unappreciative of the cost of our victory in WWII that we have people second guessing our actions during the war.  Americans for the most part just don't appreciate what they have.  Liberals prey on the sense of guilt over things that many perceive they didn't earn.  Americans are fast to throw liberty away in the interest of "social harmony" or "saftey."  The Founders and people of Their day would never understand, because they put Their asses on the line and suffered for Their beliefs, and so did those with Them.  I'm not projecting any feelings of malcontent, I'm observing them, and you are in a fool's paradise if you can't see it.

Edited to add:  Plus, Freud advicated the use of cocaine and was horribly addicted to cocaine himself, making his theories on the human psyche more than a little suspect.
