WTF?.....

Three Gettysburg battlefield monuments vandalized
February 16, 2006

GETTYSBURG, Pa. --Monuments honoring Civil War soldiers from Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts were damaged late Wednesday or early Thursday morning, Gettysburg National Military Park officials said.

The head of a sculpture was stolen on Devil's Den, a rocky part of the battlefield, and a sword was taken from a second memorial. A third marker's sculpture landed on a decorative iron fence, which also was damaged.

"It's terribly sad, and the monuments were put there by the veterans and survivors of this battle. So what's happened is, it's their memory that is vandalized," said park spokeswoman Katie Lawhon.

The bronze sculpture of an artilleryman from the monument to Smith's Battery, also known as the 4th New York Battery, was dragged from its place and its head was removed and is missing, Lawhon said.

The top stone and sculpture from the 11th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Monument were toppled, and a sword was stolen from it.

Also, the vandals pulled down a bronze sculpture of a Zouave infantryman from the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Monument, and a fence was damaged when it fell.

Thieves have damaged park monuments three times in the last year-and-a-half. They also stole a bronze sword from a Pennsylvania cavalry marker in January 2005 and a sword from the monument to Alexander Hays in September 2004. Those crimes have not been solved.

Bronze markers, including state seals, also are occasionally stolen from the park.

Motorists also have taken a toll on the park's historical objects in recent years. Drivers crashed into the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry right flank marker in 2004, and destroyed a cast-iron cannon carriage and damaged the 74th Pennsylvania Infantry Monument in separate 2003 incidents.

The 6,000-acre park houses some 1,300 monuments to the tide-changing July 1863 battle between the Union and Confederate armies.

Probably scumbag kids....they should be lined up, a group of hard core CW re-enactors line up and execute them, CW style.

A fitting end to scumbags who would do this....

I simply don't have the words to express my grief. I don't understand what would cause someone to do this in their own country, to their own history. I hope they are caught and beaten.

This is like San Fran turning away the USS Iowa. When I read this, the first thing that came to mind was a bunch of liberal hippies protesting the war by desecrating a monument that has nothing to do with the current conflict. Whoever did this should be hanged Civil War -era style.

That really stinks.

I love that place.

I got a cool detail because my Squad Leader knew I was into history, so, he sent me up to G-Burg
to find a place for the MRDC CSM to re-enlist. I found the place where a company from his
home county fought that day, near the Angle.

I got an AAM for that one

Maybe if they kept the grass cut and the place clean, vandals could be seen before damage was done. I love that place where so many great Southerners died for liberty. Will be going back this summer to pay my respects again.

My family and I visit Gettysburg almost every summer; we have a very special connection with that place. First some dickheads want to build a casino virtually on top of the battlefield, now this.

I would beat the ever-living motherfuck out of those people if I knew who it was.

53,000 soldiers died in 3 days at Gettysburg. This battlefield is hallowed ground.

The scum that defiled the place have committed high treason and should be summarily executed without delay or ceremony. I only wish I could be the prick that finds them.

Here's a surveillance photo of one of the perps:

I say skip the trial, just execute the fuckers

In such cases, when they are found out, they usually turn out to be spoiled, unsupervised kids from well-heeled local families who blab their deeds to pals in school and on the Internet.

Tourists from away are generally very respectful of monuments. Local HS kids in poorly supervised field trips are the worst I deal with during the day as a park ranger, but sometimes local %&$#$$ come in after hours and do things they shouldn't be doing. Graffiti on the stone fences of the original Battle Road suddenly last year, for one. We found the HS the kids were from, found out the kids names (they wrote them on the rocks....) and fried their little asses in court. Destroying fed. historic. property can get you into a world of shit.

As they do re cases of shitheads with metal detectors on NPS land (felony!), once they find the perps, the NPS pursues these cases with extreme prejudice.

The Toll Bros., nationally known scumbag developers, are going to be developing multimillion dollar homes right next to Valley Forge. Americans don't give a damn, frankly.
