I just bought a set of Goodyear MT/Rs for my Durango only about 2 weeks ago. I walk up to my truck this afternoon, and low and behold, there's what looks like a BIGASS nail right in the middle of the (really) thick tread. I mean, the head is almost 1/2 an inch around, and fairly thick, which rules out a short little roofing nail. So, I figure I'll go to Discount Tire (where I bought them) and have them pull it out in case it creates a huge hole.

They come back thirty minutes later and show me what was left of a empty (thankfully) shell casing. It's obviously Wolf, but I can't tell whether it's a .223 or a 5.45. Thankfully, they were able to just patch the tire.

Anybody else ever have this happen to them?

In a pinch, you can just take a roll of Reynolds aluminum foil and wrap it round your head.

When I was a youngin' working at the gas station I pulled all sorts of weird crap out of tires. Combs, brushes, toothbrushes, you name it. Never had a shell casing, but I know it's possible.

From my experience, this kind of crap only happens to heavy cars and trucks. The lighter cars just don't have the weight to force a toothbrush through a new tire.

Not true. When I had my '95 Dodge Avenger, I got a bad flat. The guy who fixed it found a CO2 cartridge (like from a bb gun) or possibly a small NOS cartridge (couldn't tell, no writing on it). It was just rattling around inside the tire.

I'm sure it's possible. All I'm saying is that in my experience working at the station for 5 years I never pulled out things like that from lightweight imports. It was only the big, heavy domestics that accumulated large, blunt objects in the tires. Most of the small cars just got slow leaks from nails, which my tight-assed boss would plug instead of patch. Your mileage may vary.

A tornado can drive a piece of straw into a 2x4.
I would imagine that a car/truck tire can pick up almost anything at the right speed/angle.JMHO

I worked for Discount Tire here in TX for five years. I have pulled many odd items from tires for repair. A sparkplug, quater, bone, Bic pen, toothbrush, and lots of rocks, but no shell casing.

Last month, I got not ONE, but TWO flats from shell casings. Gotta stop driving that close to where people shoot, and get the others to pick up the cases [:(]

I remember seeing a picture on-line once regarding a World Rally Car getting a puncture. A bullet casing had punctured the tread, and caused a slow leak. When they dismounted the tire, they discovered that the round was LIVE. The picture showed the bullet tip still in the case. What would have happened if the primer was struck and the round went off?
