Let's say you were given $100,000 in cash. You suddenly have no possession whatsoever except the clothes you are currently wearing. The rules are that you cannot make anymore money and you cannot find it, steal it, or accept gifts. You have to find a way to survive on the 100K for as long as possible.

Where do you go, what do you do, and how do you live? How long do you estimate you can survive in such a situation before the money runs out?

Ok, I can't make any more money... Can I make the money make money through investments?

Obviously, no. This would invalidate the whole experiment.

About five days in Vegas.

thats 100,000 mcdoubles.
4 a day = 25,000 days
25,000 divided by 365= 68.4 years
assuming you get free water with the mcdoubles.

In that case, I could survive for decades on 100,000 dollars.

Probably idenfinately if you picked up a small home in the south with a few acres. You could keep a large garden and small livestock. As long as you were smart about breeding livestock and kept enough for seed you could do ok.  Now medical issues may put a huge screw into it later. Property taxes etc would shorten the length of time as well without at least a meager income.

It would vary by locale.   Sunnier and warmer the better.

I would rent a room in a home

I would get a bike or a bus pass

Find a walk-in clinic  for medical issues

Check out second hand clothing stores

Food ...  maybe join a farming co-op if possible....give you something to do, after all, you're mostly trying to survive..playing a game.

Fun...mall, beach, museums, parks, or any liberal gathering where you can get something for NEARLY nothing.

Maybe as cheap as $400 a mo.......so 250 months or 20 years.   $600 a mo......160 mos or 15 years.

"Thou seest how few the things
are, the which if a man lays hold of, he is able to live a life which flows
in quiet, and is like the existence of the gods"-Marcus Aurelius

I could live comfortably for the rest of my life but I grew up poor so its not a mystery to me how to make the most of it.

How much do McRibs cost?

I couldn't last that long with no job and/or income.  Wife, cat, and a dog.

If I didn't have those, who knows.  I'm sure I could bum off the people walking the Appalachian Trail for years if I went there and hiked the trail up to Maine during warm months and GA during the cold months.  I couldn't bring myself to beg on street corners.

Is barter permitted? Say you grow tomatoes and use the tomatoes to trade for say a shovel.

Foreign country with low cost of living.

Buy some rural property (cheap) somewhere with moderate summers and mild winters, build a little shack/cabin + solar panels + a fireplace or wood stove. Grow a vegetable garden and hunt, maybe raise chickens. I'm sure I could live for a long time with a few cases of .22LR and 12GA birdshot + home grown vegetables.

Either that or build a solar powered shack on a beach in a cheap tropical country (Costa Rica maybe?) and live off my relative fortune.

3 months? You're doing it wrong, a hundred thousand in hookers and blow should last two and a half days maximum

Easy - find an absentee land owner that has a cottage on his place, and offer to take care of his land and cattle for the privilege of living on his land. You'll need a reference, but being a stranger isn't part of the scenario. Depending on how much resources the ranch has, you could live for 20-30 years comfortably off of 100 grand.

I'd go about 3 to 6 months spending like a drunken sailor - live in nice motels, buy a new truck, new clothes and shoes, a dozen assorted firearms, and plenty of hoochie koochie.  After the money ran out, I'd go back to having a job ........ except I'd have me a new truck, new guns, new clothes ....... and maybe a few new lady friends.

Face it, one would get bored real quick and want to go back to a normal life, so might as well spend it as fast as you can.

Drop 20k on a house, make payments for a year. then file for bankrupcy.

Cut a deal with the government to let me stay in the house for like $100 a month.

Live off of food stamps/welfare etc.

Use the rest of the money for hookers and blow.

And barder for shit on craigslist(turn a paperclip into a ferrari)

Work is for suckers

I've gotta believe you can take 100k somewhere else and live much longer than in the US...where I'm not sure. I have a family of 4, so it'd need to be somewhat safe...what's Uruguay or Paraguay like
Then again I could just buy a trailer on some land in the south & make it like the 1800's

I'd go somewhere rural, buy a couple acres (hopefully with a house), raise chickens and goats, start a big garden, and live that way. As for firearms, I'd get an 870 with a bunch of ammo, and a .22 with a boatload of ammo. A 9mm pistol with a .22 conversion kit, if there were money left over.
