Since I'm single again and wanting to get the most out of life this summer, if you are 40 or over what do you wish you would have done or actually did back when you were age 27-30 and single?  I'm interested in hearing anything that you might have done.  I'm looking at people who are 60 have major problems walking and can't enjoy the funner things in life.  I don't want to end up at 60 and think about all the things I wish I had done, I want to remember doing them.

Well I am 27 so here is what I would do if I was 40.

1) Wake up and immediately reach for my package and make sure it is still there. If it happens to be one of the two blessed days out of the year when it was hard, I would put it to my wife or service myself. You can't waste something that precious.

2) Resist the desire to fart before I sit on the toilet because I could gamble and lose or flair up my 'roids. Either way its a lose, lose situation.

3) Drink half a gallon of Citrucel and eat a fuckin bran muffin with some prune juice for breakfast.

4) Sit on my inflatable donut in my cubicle for 8 hours. Eat heart-healthy alfalfa pita my wife made for lunch.

5) Jump back in the mini-van and head for home.

6) Stop by the pharmacy to pick up some Rogaine and refill my Viagra prescription.

8) Watch 60 Minutes II and go to bed.

Just having some fun with the old timers!!!

What would I do if I were 27 again? Not live with the crazy blonde I was with back then- sheesh- what a wackjob- How much of a wackjob was she? I had to put the whole Atlantic Ocean between us to get away from her [shock]-

Life is much better at 46 than at 27, believe me.

In every way. [sex]

Get into physical shape!
I'm 46.
I didn't get into physical shape until I was 39.
It's amazing how much better you feel about yourself, not to mention how many more female type persons you meet when you are physically fit!
I run 3 miles 3 time a week and lift weights in between.
When I was 27 I was just living to party - big mistake!  I managed to pull myself out of that self deprecating pit - I hope you also can find the solution to your emotional/physical problem....

I'm 32 but @ 27 I really missed a great opportunity.

My best friends' cousin was/is gorgeous and was really into me and I her.  For 3-4 years it seemed we were never on the same page though.  One night we were out and she flat asked me to fuck her.  I said "let's finish these drinks".  Well a bunch of mutual friends showed up, 2 hours later we finally leave to go to her place.  We get there...  She passes out.  I left and then she started dating someone, so did I and she got married, so did I.

That is the one thing I would change about my late 20's.  I could have fell head over heals for that girl.  But I digress!

swire;

I think you deserve a decent answer. So I’ll try.

When a person is forty-something and looks back, one invariably begins to think that there were so many things they could have done different or better.
But I’ve had other guys tell me that they wished they could have done what I did, and it set me to thinking I am really too hard on myself. I actually DID do a number of things right.

So what are my suggestions for a 20-something?

UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!, DON’T GET MARRIED OR FATHER A CHILD.
If you want to have the freedom to try new things, take risks, marriage and/or child rearing is definitely out!

Don’t let a girlfriend move in. Living together long term is like marriage w/o the paper. You start “settling in.” Next thing you know, a half decade has slid by.

Don’t buy a house or accumulate a lot of possessions. Stuff weighs you down. The more difficult it is to move, the more likely it is that you may miss an opportunity.

STAY OUT OF DEBT. Don’t buy what you can’t pay for or can’t pay off relatively quickly. Budgets can be a drag though. So do what I did. Account for your money. Keep a ledger. Use it to identify and eliminate wasteful spending. Save. Not for your old age. Not yet. Save for that big move. Or a career change, or the trip of a lifetime. Not having a liquid reserve limits your options.

Take care of your body. Eat properly. Begin an exercise regime you can stick with for life. When you’re forty and can wear a pair of jeans from your teenage years, you’ll know why.
Never take recreational drugs. Shun “extreme” sport stunts. When your forty and you wake up w/o aches and pains, and your memory is good, you’ll know why.

To sum it up, you want to strike some kind of balance in your 20's between -
De Niro's philosophy in the movie "Heat." That was to have nothing in his life he can't walk away from in 30 seconds flat.
{Too radical}
And the marriage, mortgage & kids thing that locks you into an unyielding conditioned set of responses.
{Too confining}
Stay loose, but not too crazy. Experiment. It’s your last time on the highway of life to change lanes when it’s least likely to hurt.

Hope this helped.

Dude, I'm 50 and I laughed my ass off at thos.  But there's one thing I have to say, in 50 years, I've NEVER been constipated...I can't even relate to that term...even the concept is foreign to me hehehe.  Been the opposite, though [;)]

I am glad you have all enjoyed my post. I have a neighbor who is like a father to me and my post somewhat came out of his rules for living at 50:

1) Never Trust a Fart
2) Never waste an erection
3) Always take a piss when near a toilet

I do agree with AZ and the others about exercise. I am still in the "eat trash" and "drink like a wildman but pay for days" phase. I would like to shed some lbs. but no motivation.

Thanks for the responses, keep them coming.

I started thinking about this question because I'm 27 and was looking back on my last 10 years.  There are only a couple things that I would like to change.  The main thing was getting into the huge amount of debt that I got myself into.  I am missing out on several oppertunities right now because I'm still paying for that mistake.

I have had a pretty active life.  Living in several locations in the 3 different states.  Right now I'm tired of moving, changing my address, and paying rent.  So I bought a fixer upper house, which I am now in the process of refinancing to hopefully cancel out some of my credit card debt. (I know it just shifts the debt but it will make it easier to manage).  I've gone skydiving.  I was engaged but now that is off.  Right now, I'm not sure that I even believe in the idea of marriage.  I haven't met anyone person that would provide everything that I would want, so why should I get settled in that situation?

So I'm looking at a summer where I might actually have some spare cash, where I'm single, I've been working out for awhile and look pretty darn good.  I have a job where I get every other Friday off.  I want to take advantage of all these things so 3,5, or 10 years down the road I don't kick myself for letting good years and oppertunities pass me by.

I plan to travel this summer.  With a 3 day weekend every other week, I would be crazy to sit around at home.

If you have a decent job, and given how cheap money is at the moment, do yourself a favor and buy a house (or some sort of property). Mortgage rate aren't going to get any lower, and this way, when you are 42 you can own your home free and clear and not be worried about making those mortgage payments.

I would:

Learn to Scuba dive.

Learn to Skydive.

Learn to white-water kayak.

Stay out of debt.

Donate orgasms to every little "hottie" that I could get friendly with.

Go shooting more.

Hike the entire length of the Appalachin Trail.

I'm sure there are more, but that's just my "short list"...

I currently have a house.  I plan on getting into real estate investments and this one is my start.  The plan was to buy it, fix it up, refinance to wipe out some of the credit cards, get the rest of my debt in line, then find a different place to live and rent this place out commercially with the rent being enough to cover not only the original purchase price but the refinaced loan that took care of my credit cards.  That's my plan.  I will know within a couple weeks if the refinancing will go as well as I hoped.

I also have a partner who is already in real estate investments and willing to back me financially.  So the financial aspect of my life is getting back on track.

There aren't too many places to scuba in Kentucky compared to when I was in Michigan but I've wanted to learn.

My interest in firearms has severaly decreased.  Partially because I was buying things on credit instead of with real money.  I will get my CCW again this summer.  I had one in Michigan but haven't gotten one in Kentucky since I moved.

I will look at the Appalachin Trail.  I know to walk it from start to finish takes about 6 months.  But I wouldn't mind hicking different parts of it.

I am also thinking of finally getting a motorcycle.  I've read the threads on here and know about the good and bad of it.  But I think I would enjoy it and that's what I'm trying to do now is enjoy life.

I aggree with most of what is posted here except this.

Quoted by FNBrowning "Don’t buy a house or accumulate a lot of possessions. Stuff weighs you down. The more difficult it is to move, the more likely it is that you may miss an opportunity."

I wished that I had not waited so long to buy a house.  Buddy of mine that started earler than I have more to show for it than I did.  Money is so cheap right now. it is a no brainer to buy a house, and try to some 15 year note. almost half of the first payment will go to equity.

and if you meet some girl that has a house, keep you own for a rental.

this is just my take,

I would definitely take more time for myself and not fall into the live for work and totally sacrifice yourself for family routine.
My experience is that it is not reciprocated sufficiently enough to make it worthwhile.
Am I saying just induldge yourself? Not at all.
Work and Family is important. But so are you, keep it in perspective. Other than that, save for the future, get your piece of property, and don't spend more than you make/can comfortably afford.
In short, smell the roses along the way.

Edited to state that I am 53, learned this the hard way, and have finally reached a level of happiness by pushing for less, and enjoying myself and my everyday life more.

If I could time-warp back to when I was 27???

The first thing I would do would be to divorce my ex-wife.

If I had been cut loose from her way back then, I wouldn't be on the hook to the bitch for any of my retired pay!

SWIRE, I'm 46 years old, and this is [b]damned good advice[/b] FNBrowning is giving you. It's pretty much how I've lived my life, too. I didn't get married until I was 31, and didn't become a father (1st of three times) until 35.

It's funny - all the people I knew when I was a musician in my 20s are all either dead, in jail (again), have wrecked lives, bodies and families, and almost none of them have (m)any teeth left! [shock] . Glad I took reasonably good care of myself- it pays off in the end.

Edited: Run from my then girlfriend turned wife who divorced me the slut, butt before then f*ck her in the ass - a little premptive strike!

Stay single and relatively "involved" with some cutey, who shares my ideals, who can hold her own when the SHTF - is educated and speaks well, has a real job and can suck a golf ball through a garden hose with breast of marble and inch long nips AND most of all isn't a fucking emotional blackhole.

Stay with the motto "save half of what you make" charge nothing and always smile - it is cheap. I agree with keeping fit, even after falling of off the treadmill. Push some weights eat reasonably and drink responsibly. Love your parents and tell them so. If they are gone, visit their grave, bring flowers and say a prayer.

If you find a woman and marry it's OK! I'm 26 and have been married faithfully for 3 years. It has been a lot of fun and I don't regret anything. We have traveled the world together, lived in the Virgin Islands for a year(read:SCUBA diving and snorkeling every day, and dancing and playing every night on a friends yacht or a club) Of course we have to slow down a bit now that she is pregnant, But I am happy. How much happier than happy can a guy be? We just got back from a trip to Germany and Amsterdam, and having my wife with me was great. I don't know why people are so averse to marriage. Do what makes you happy.
