I have been infected by multiple computer viruses. I thought I got them all but they have still messed my computer up. The thunderstorm last night knocked out the power and has done some funky stuff to my computer so I am going to have to set here at the computer all day burning all of my files so I can format the harddrive and re-install Windows.

Run down to Office Max/Staples and get a USB external harddrive to backup your files. Much faster and easier than burning. They're cheap now. I got one several months ago...stores ~ 200GB for ~ $150.

At one time I had a small program from gateway that would write 0's to you entire hard drive. If I remeber correctly, there is small chance a virus can still be in the master boot record after a win-blows re-install.

This is weird, I have a virus that won't let me update my anti-virus software or ad-aware.
Link Posted: 7/31/2005 8:50:06 AM EDT

goto Panda's site if your computer will still boot. They have a free online scanner, run it. Make sure to check the box that automatically fixes/eliminates the virus/spyware.
Damn fine scanner

Actually that's quite common. Have you tried running a an online vrius scan from Symantec and Trend Micro? Have you tried scanning in safe mode? Have you run HijackThis?

What ever it is, it is also affecting my memory. I keep getting low on virtual RAM, though I only have 3 windows open and I have over 300MEGS worth.

Not yet, I am trying to burn all of my music, pictures and other important files before anything bad happens. Once I get it all backed up I will start trying to figure out the root cause of the problem.

I was able to back up all of my data. I ran panda anti-virus, followed by ad-aware. I then added ZoneAlarm secuirity firewall and did additional scans for spyware and virus. I found quite a bit of crap on my computer. Hopefully now I am virus/spyware free.

VTHOKIESHOOTER: If you're really anal of not getting hit by viruses, get a hardware router with a built-in hardware firewall in case a program gets by ZoneAlarm at the local Fry's or CompUSA. They cost about $10 for the hardwired variety, and can help hide your cmputer from the prying eyes of the big bad meanies in cyberspace.

I got tired of viruses.....I finally just stopped surfing sites I didnt know and trust.
I probably only use about a dozen sites from my home pc any more.

Im into the scorched earth thing....if I wind up with a computer problem that will take more than an hour to fix, i format the HD and reinstall the OS.....roll back to a clean disk...easiest way to be sure its really virus free.

Stop browsing the web on an Administrator account and you wouldn't get infected in the first place.

I've been doing this since Windows 95 days and it's always worked for me. If you get hit with something or it all goes bad just re-install Windows over the C:\ drive and not worry about the D:\ data drive.

If you are interested in a bulletproof operating system download a live version of Linux. I like Knoppix. After downloading the 20-600 Mb worth of file you drag and drop it onto a blank CD and Windows will burn the image for you. Then you reboot your computer with the CD in place and you're up and running Linux. Take the CD out and reboot and you're back to Windows.

I actually don't save any porn. The only thing that I down load is music and the pictures of dogs, guns and airplanes that are posted here on arfcom. I also download a lot of aerial photo's and topo maps for work.
