Can be had for around $875-$900. 7 shots of .357 goodness to deafen and muzzle-flash both you and your attackers.

Do it. I have three S&W .357s. Nothing from the custom shop but I'd never sell them.
|

I was thinking about getting one of those or the 627 pc snubby, until I got to handle one of the 627s. I wasn't really impressed with the double action trigger and the grips felt like they were designed for a ninja turtle.

it's pretty, but i would rather have one of the old school m686's with a 2.5 or 4 inch barrel.. that's one of the guns i could kick myself for not getting...

I own a snub nosed 357 mag.
If I ever bought another 357 mag handgun I would get one with no shorter than a 4" barrel. Shooting a magnum load out of a 2" barrel is pointless, unless you like big fireballs, punishing recoil, and negligible energy over what a 38 spl load offers. |
|
Prefer my Mod 66 2-1/2 .357 but considering most armed confrontations are 10ft or less short barrels just make more sense.

Its not hollering your name. Its hollering..........SUCKER!!!!! |

For .357 this is what I actually want..

See that thin little piece of bent stainless steel that slides into the frame just above the forcing cone? That's what stands between you and a flame cut top strap. Not too comfortable to shoot either. |

Yeah the longer barrel is nice (I have a couple of longer barreled .357's) but 34 oz. is about my limit for weight. The Model 327 posted here is interesting, but dang, shooting .357's out of a gun that light would be super-snappy!
I carried my GP100 (4.2" barrel) around the house/yard today (in a paddle holster) just to see how I would "like" carrying a 40 oz. gun, and after an hour it got real old (I usually carry a Glock 19 or CZ2075 RAMI). This 686 Plus is about the same weight as a Sig Sauer P226 which can get heavy wearing on the hip. Need to have a sturdy belt once guns go over 30 oz. Edit: I have a SP101, but only 5 shots!...and the gun needs a trigger job out of the box (which I had done). BigPony, that revolver is Schweet! |

Somewhere a 28-2 Highway Patrolman is laughing at this thread.

if you like it, buy it.
it's a 686. Personally, I think the sweet spot for a 6-7rd carry oriented.357mag is 3"....but that's just me. Never knew why those were so hard to come by. |
|

Wow I think that revolver is calling my name too. Pricey though yikes.
|
|
I think a 6" would be significantly more pleasant to shoot, but maybe you just have gorilla hands or something.
|
|
I dig revolvers but not really the stubbys, I would go 4 inch, or even 6 inch. But for back up ccw I guess I could see it. Go for it if its you thing, its just a steep price, too steep for me.

The revolver that I posted (S&W 66-5 2.5") along with the S&W model 65-3 3" are some of the most balanced pistols I've ever held.

Would be a handful.
I really like the WW1 Colt Revolver, think S&W made one as well. With the half moon 'clips.' |

That must have been some time ago...For that price! I never get those deals I bought two nearly brand new 4" model 19's some years ago for $125 each. S&W revolver prices have gone through the roof in the last few years. You can't touch a decent one for under $500 anymore. |

And since I don't want anything over 34-35 oz., I had to post the famous Colt Walker (usually carried in a holster attached to the saddle). This gun weighed 4.5 lbs. Yes, 72 oz. Oh my goodness.
I'll look at some of the older S&W's; great advice. Can they handle today's magnum loads, or is there no difference between the magnum loads of today versus the 1960's-1980's? Colt Walker being held by the famous outlaw Jose Wales. I kid, I kid: Josie Wales: |
