I haven’t given a pirate update in a while so here we go.
First, that video is old. Russia and India have been kicking the shit out of pirates while the US and other "nicer" countries disarm them and release them to attack another day. I have videos and photos I may post one day but I need to check some things out first.
The pirates are now using more hi tech weapons. They are buying the best stuff on the market since they are fat with money. They upgraded from the RPG-7 to the RPG-29, not sure who they are buying from.
They are also buying heavy caliber rifles. They didn’t used to be able to penetrate most ship hulls, especially double hull tankers but now they can. Last month they attacked a super tanker and penetrated the hull setting the ship on fire and forcing the crew to abandon her.
It is so bad out there the UK government released a notice to all British flagged ships saying they do not condone the use of armed private security but they also would not deny their use.
I want to be careful with releasing numbers but I will say during one recent engagement where pirates attacked a ship, private security killed between 10-20 pirates thwarting the attack.
During another recent attack 25, yes I said 25 pirate skiffs attacked a large ship with a valuable cargo. Private security thwarted that attack also. Number of pirates killed during that attack is unknown.
Most companies are hiring private security from other countries besides the US due to cost and the worry of having to deal with the US govt.
The problem is getting worse, not better.
Thank you for your insight.
For every attack that is stopped, how many are successful? Is that a figure that you can share-even if you can't use specific numbers?
If the problem is getting worse that tells me that there is still a strong incentive to carry out these attacks (obviously). Are ships flying certain flags more likely to be hit, since the pirates know that some governments are more passive than others?
