The only difference now is anyone can post their vitriole on the web.  With all the new outlets available, more people can spread their message.  The hate-filled crazies have always been out there.  The web simply has given everyone a megaphone.

We had internet during the Gore/Bush battle, and some internet during Clinton/Dole.

Back in college, oh so many years ago, we went through some of the old campaign literature. I remember seeing posters which claimed Lincoln had a black mother, had a black mistress, had made deals  with the devil, was the devil, and a lot mre I can't remember. We saw examples of other campaigns, but I don't remember the specifics anymore.

Campaigning today seems tame by comparison.
