I have been reading article after article about us decommissioning older Naval and Airpower. Why don't we give this to our allies instead of selling them for scrap for a dollar. The Philippine's could use this to deter China and would happily pay more than a buck... Plus we would save money having to run this hardware over there.. Why do we waste so much.... They could afford to upgrade and we could sell that service.

Old battleships, Fighters, and we just decom'd a helo-carrier.

There are very few countries that currently operate aircraft carriers. Operating even one (like China, Russia, France, etc.) is a very expensive proposition. The Philippine Air Force/Navy, such as it is, does not currently have a single aircraft (excluding helicopters) that could fly off it. They don't have the infrastructure to operate it, ships to protect it, or frankly, a need to project air power.

China would likely be the only country interested in taking one of these off our hands.

I would hope that if retrofiting and upgrading was a feasible option then we would have done so ourselves.

It's a hard pill to swallow and often seems counter-intuitive, but sometimes the most economical thing to do is just scrap it.

DK-Prof: I knew we handed down some hardware, but I've read 5 to 1 that we scrap older stuff rather and sell it. How about those planes in Afghanistan that we bought, found out they didn't work in that environment so we let them sit for 10 years then blew them up??? Are you telling me Poland or even Lithuania couldn't have used them?

Selling them for a dollar is getting off cheap. When you consider the cost of environmental remediation. Many of the older ships are chock full of asbestos, among other things.

its not just ships and such. the gov / military wastes a incredible amount of money. look at the kinds of things they just plain destroy... and pay millions to do it... when it could be sold to americans for tens / hundreds of millions. ( m1 rifles, and 1911's clinton had destroyed....479,367 M14 rifles were destroyed ( which at a minimum could have been sold as parts, stocks, bolts, barrels, triggers, sights, etc, and made good money, instead of being shredded....and i believe hundreds of ww1 era singer 1911's.)....... military hummers, that have been scrapped forever, that civilians would LOVE to be able to buy.....handguns that are scrapped, or plain given to foreign countries......the list is pretty much endless.

carter admin supposedly torched 300.000 m1 garands.... before they were pressured to stop. what would 300.000 m1 garands be worth today? $150 million bucks at least?

hell, we have to pretty much FIGHT to be allowed to buy surplus small arms brass from drmo, which is worth many, many times more money as brass casings for reloading, than scrap brass. you have to get a fucking end use certificate, like your buying a 5 ton truck, to buy fucking brass casings now.

etc, etc, etc,

pretty much anything surplus, with rare exceptions.... should be offered to the american public first to purchase.... gov is a business, and it should be run as one....

should all be for sale to us average joes, at whatever the auction sells it for. before being handed to some foreign power. we paid for the shit when the gov bought it.. we should be able to purchase it heavily discounted when its outdated.

The ones that were sitting in Afghanistan were a write off. Getting them safe to fly out of country would probably have been just as expensive as just buying a new one.

Compared to Afghanis working on them a decade of neglect would have lead to a better chance of flying again.

Our fighters are worn out by the time they make it to the boneyard. They are at the end of their service life and we get the most value out of them by turning them into targets or just picking parts out of them.

I agree. DRMO should have two categories of equipment: 1) Equipment sold to the highest bidder when the federal government has no more need for it. 2) Equipment that is completely unsafe for civilian use that has to be destroyed. And there should be a very small amount of the latter.

Now the one thing that stinks about the ships getting scrapped for one dollar is that the contracting system won't let bidders offer less than that. The contractors would have paid to be able to scrap the ships (since they get to sell the materials) but the system doesn't allow for negative numbers.
