Early 5906, stepped frame, square guard, adjustable sights. The 5906 had a steel frame and some nice heft.  She's not mint, but in VGC. Enjoy

Great nightstand or range gun, but nicknamed the boat anchor for a reason.

Respectfully disagree.  This one is as smooth shooting and accurate as a 9mm can be, and we're blessed to have a safe full of examples of most all modern handguns, steel and polymer.  IMO, these things were the true state of the art.

I've been shooting my Glocks more than anything lately. Grabbed my 4026 out of the safe today and nearly dropped it. I forgot how heavy that thing was. Definitely makes it more fun to shoot.

I've managed to pick up three 5903s over the last month for me and my boys. I love 3rd gen Smiths.

We have an "Atlanta Police" marked 5903 that I plan to post later.  That's an awesome carry gun, with its aluminum frame.  Sweetness indeed.

I have several gen 3 Smith semi automatics. I wish I knew where to find some police trade in's at a reasonable price. I think they are great pistols.

Here's mine. It was my High School graduation present. Bought new in 1989.

Mine came in a cardboard box. Still got it.

My friend, I fear those times and opportunities are close to over.  ShotgunNews does sometimes advertise wholesellers that have some, but good examples are becoming harder to find.  But in all fairness, they were most all built like tanks, so any dept trade-in is likely made a jewel with some new Wolff springs.

Bought my 4026 from a guy at work for $300. There were less than 600 made (maybe less than 400).
I got a 4046 off of GB for under $300.
Bought a 669 from a friend for $250.

My 1006 cost me good money. I wasn't patient on that one.

I had a performance center 4006.

I was a fool and sold it.

I miss it every time one of you bastards bring up 3rd gen S&W autos.

Please stop.

Just picked up a 5946 last week.

From what I've researched, looks like it was made around 1994.

I've ordered some wolff springs to lighten up the trigger and some square grips.

M 4006 was definitely not an example to be proud of.  Certainly not state of the art.   A real jammomatic, sent it back to S&W and even they couldn't fix it. Had no choice but to get rid of it.

ETA: I've owned three S&W autos, and only one has been reliable, a 1911.  When it comes to revolvers S&W wins hands down. But for autos, Glock is still the "state of the art".

Actually, I've owned quite a few Glocks over the years, and many jammed when brand new.  I have a really old 6906 that, in say 20 years of trips to the range, has NEVER jammed, even when we fucked around and limp-wristed it.
