Steyr,
I am confused (been drinking) you want a Colt 1991 worked over by Colt's Custom Shop ? Or your looking at using a 1991 as a base gun for a project ? Colt's QC has done a 180 is the last few years... They even top Kimber and Springfield as a base gun from the top of the line 'smith I know. I had my carry gun built on a Colt Seris-80 Enhanced, only because I got a deal on the pistol... This thing was crap when it showed up, it was awful... The only thing my gun still has that is Colt are the slide and frame. However, I was super impressed with Colt's offerings at the '02 SHOT Show and many 'smiths have said the new offerings are great, their #1 choice. |

Haven't ever seen any of their work... I suppose it would depend on price. If it's the same cost as a Baer, I'd rather have a Baer.
I suspect they would turn out a quality product. Companies turn out quality products, but when it comes to custom stuff... I'd tend to stick with a place that has built a solid reputation like Novak's or Jim Garthwaite. Has it had anything else done to it ? I can change a trigger and stocks. |

Are you thinking about a full custom or semi custom...
I like Ed Browns "Cobra" series for a semi custom and for full... I am planning on a Caspian frame and slide ..without sight cuts and sending it off to Ted Yost.. Ted was the honcho smith at Gunsight for many years and is a lead instructor at Yapi (sp?) School Of Trades in Az Here is a nice colt he reworked [img]http://www.tedyostguns.com/images/1911-1.jpg[/img] [url]http://www.tedyostguns.com/1911.htm[/url] Give him a call or email...he did a Hi Power for me..that is just about perfect he was great to deal with..very knowledgeable and honest..anwers emails promptly..and will help you design just what you want.. |

Basically a Colt 1991 with new trigger and fancy grips. I've only ever owned 1911s, never a 1991.

Well, Colts' QC may have done a turnaround lately, but it does not show in the ones I have seen...granted, I may not have seen the very latest guns. Given their track record of building junk and using their name to market it for the past two decades or more, I think I would let some other folks play guinea pig for a while longer.
Get an older (Series 70 or before) Colt and have it reworked, a Kimber or a SA, and I think you will be much happier and out less $$$. |

Unless things have changed, the 1991 has a firing pin safety linked to the trigger. A lot of folks don’t like that because of the effect the safety has on the trigger pull.

I handled a couple of the mil-spec 1991s. The slide to frame fit is pretty good, but the triggers are damn awful. A Custom Shop one may be better, but you may want to consider a Series I Kimber or a decent Springfield as your base platform to build on.

Les Baer, Ed Brown, Rock River Arms 1911...if the price of your "custom" Colt 1991 is anywhere near one these, don't waste your money on the Colt.
RRA will be the cheapest of the three, and it's a toss up between Les Baer and Ed Brown depending on the dealer you purchase from. |
