Personally I think the first two to go should be FEMA director Mike Brown and Homeland security director Chertoff should be publicly blasted and terminated.

Browns group has been ineffective for much too long. And frankly at 500,000,000 a day price tag for hurricane relief, the taxpayers have a right to expect more.

Chertoff had to go because apparently there is a complete lack of recognition on what a major recovery effort entails. The city of NO dropped into chaos while the 'big whigs' sat on their collective rears and watched. Inexcusible.

They have to go. What say you?

Link Posted: 9/2/2005 5:02:41 PM EDT
yeah - since the hurricane was *their* fault, of course they are to blame. DUh....

why didn't N.O. prepare properly? why didn't they do their own disaster program, like in FLorida?
because they are non-working, free-loading, welfare-receiving, section 8, liberal, socialists

I think he should fire the Mayor and police chief of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana. Unfortunately, only the voters can fire them and they were stupid enough to elect them in the first place.

On a side note I heard through the grapevine that he was going to fire these people and replace them with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Fear not, help is on the way.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 5:05:54 PM EDT
Sure, but not because of the hurricane.

Norman Mineta, Clinton holder and Sec. of Transportation, should have been fired years ago for refusing to racially profile airline passengers at security points after 9/11.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 5:07:03 PM EDT
You should be fired.
Link Posted: 9/2/2005 5:07:19 PM EDT
I have to disagree. The Mayor of NO and the governor of LA are to blame. They were elected by their citizens and they had the duty to protect their citizens more than anyone else. They had assets at their disposal, and they had the command and control authority to deploy them as needed. They had an evac plan that they should have executed in a Cat 3 storm that they did half-assed. The photo of 200 school busses neatly parked and underwater tells the story of their incompetence and lack of mobilization.

MS and AL are not having problems to the level of NO because they were much more prepared and executed much better.

Think back to 9-11. Giuliani was all over the place, LEADING the rescue and recovery of the city he was ELECTED TO LEAD. He had command of the joint agencies that included state and fed, but HE WAS IN COMMAND. He didn't have a three day warning, but he had that city buttoned up quick.

The LA government pissed its pants and expected President Bush, FEMA and DHS to do their thinking for them. The passing the buck that the media and the elected leaders of Louisiana are trying to pull on the fedgov is disgusting. Nagin and Blanco should be hung for their incompetence.

The people of NO should fire a few incompetent, corrupt assholes but as for State and Federal?

I don't think some of you understand how difficult it is to get in there right now. Roads submerged, then up again. You'd have to cross several bodies of water to get there and have transportation over road when you hit one. Choppers are great but how many are there really? Boats would have been nice but most were destroyed by the Hurricane and anyone else crazy enough to go in there with a boat is gonna get shot, almost for certain.

Money's there, just no way to do what needs to be done on the scale demanded by the catastrophe.

If I had a sigline, right now it'd be:

"Blow the levees in place, MOAB."

I think we should fire the whole damn lot. Republicans and Democrats. Start over completely, this two party system IS a natural disaster.

I think things would be a lot better if ownership in a bunch of taser stocks wasnt such a big deal...

There's some good points made. I DO believe that the mayor and Gov of LA have botched it big time and hopefully the people in the 'hood will remember that next election. With a full on mobilization in the US, I expect RESULTS not anarchy and half assed excuses. Too little too late in my book. But that's just me.

+1. While you are at, DHS should be disbanded.

Also, LA governor and NO Mayor need to go. All LA cops who walked off the job need to go to jail.

I have never seen greater incompetence in my life. Idi Amin and General Aidid could do better.

You SHOULD give a shit. Know why? Here's what has happened in just about every single country with a multiparty system: a party that can't, on its own, get enough of the popular vote to control the legislature has made alliances with other parties to pass legislation that doesn't have enough popular support to pass on its own merits. Basically, you get minority control of the country.

I think everything is going as well as could be expected so far. These results were unexpected and you can only deal with problems when they come up.

Fair enough, then let's just replace these TWO with better parties.

You are an idiot.

The primary responsibility lies with state and local government. The hurricane path was well-known and the dangers of a massive hurricane hitting N.O. was also well-known. Evacuation did not begin until Saturday and by LA's and N.O.'s own plan, it would take 72 hours to evacuate the city. After the hurricane hit, the Mayor completely dropped the ball, as did the Governor. They could have had more police and guardsmen on-site much sooner, but they didn't do so.

We have yet to see how well the federal government does on this one. It's too early to point fingers at them. Look first to those responsible in the first incidence and critique their performance, or lack there of.

Personally, I would love it if we could just influence the GOP from within enough to have one good party that I could feel 100% good supporting. Unfortunately for my wishes, however, people in different states keep voting for RINOs in their Senatorial primaries.

No, what we have created is an idiotic idea, and NO is the proof. The agencies within DHS were much better without all the bureacracy. Cut them loose and they will excel.

This kind of incident should be initiated from the bottom up, not the top down...

The Governor screwed up by not activating the National Guard ahead of the storm coming ashore, which she had the legal authority to do.

The Mayor, City Council, and Chief of Police should be jailed for having the most corrupt and incompetant city in the country.

FEMA should made a separate operating agency. They did a good job prior to being combined with Homeland Security.

And finally, all looters should be shot on sight or prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if caught after the fact. They were savagers feeding off the corpse of N.O. and are no better than rabid dogs.

The government has a responsibility also, but NO seemed not prepared at all

The DHS is NOT about disaster relief, it's about protecting us from terrorism. Your idea remains truly idiotic.

FEMA needs the structure of DHS. Go read the Inspector General's reports of investigation and audits on them, if you doubt me.

Wrap us all in a rubber blankie and let the FEDs... or better yet, the POTUS take care of us. Then it's their responsibility. The "mommy" syndrome.

Like most of your other ignorant comments, you are also obviously ignorant of the fact the FEMA is part of DHS. Thus DHS is responsible for domestic disaster relief. Sucks to be ignorant like that eh? I wouldn't know.

This could have been DHS finest hour; demonstrating that after 4 years of planning, Billion and Billions of dollars spent, they could make a difference and help a small portion of a city that has been #2 in their planning for cities most likely to suffer a natural disaster. Instead, they showed what most people feared/knew, the Federal govt is completey incompetent, run by morons, and the old Reagan adage, "Government governs best when it governs least", is forever true.

No, I am very aware of that. You didn't say "I think FEMA should be moved" you said "DHS should be disbanded." It's an idiotic idea. My comments aren't ignorant, but your suggestions have been.

Hell.....Chertoff just got sworn in!...He's barely had time to open the curtains in his new office and put pensils in the holder on his desk...Why would you blame shit from the last outgoing director on him?
