Well, I'm stuck here in Camp Pendleton for work-ups for my deployment with the 1st MarDiv. Looks like I'll have some down time this week and I'm sure I'll get bored with the base activities.
What cool things to do in the SanDiego area?

Point loma, Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, Tijuana, Waterfront.
You can take the rail or bus pretty much everywhere with the same ticket. |

Black's beach for the nudists (Don't tell Mom!)
 La Jolla beach cliffs for the incredible view Ocean Beach for the craaaaazy people.   MCRD for lots of salutes San Diego Zoo Seaport Village Horton Plaza Horse racing at Del Mar if its in season Old Town for food and drink. The finest Mexican restaurant in six states is there. Can't remember the name...sorry..but the food is incredible. Get their early...it's a long wait. The place is on the corner in the middle of Old Town. |

There is a train that goes about 30 miles up the coast and turns around. I beleive it's fairly cheap to ride also. Seaport Village and the U.S.S. Midway are within walking distance. |

Lay on the beach and drink Coronas during the day (if it's nice enough) and hit the Gaslamp Quarter at night.
Got sent out to La Jolla TDY for a week as a medical escort for a guy having an ankle replacement done. Apparently the best bone replacement surgeon in the country works out there; anyway got to stay in the Marriot and had a nice large per diem. My duties consisted of riding the plane out there, dropping the guy off at the hospital, picking him up at the end of a week, taking him to the airport, and riding the plane back. The time in between was left up to me to fill. Round trip airfare to San Diego $692 Room at the Marriott for a week $1700 Per diem for a week $1200 My official duties consisting of sleeping until noon and laying on the beach all day for a week, all on the gov's dime. Priceless.

Lion Country Safari is nice place if you've never been there.
There is also a nice science museum near downtown San Diego. I've ridden the Amtrck train from Los Angeles Union Station to S.D., it's like a 3hour trip, because the train stopped something like 6 or 7 times. The traffic both ways near north S.D. and and south Orange County border is really congested if you're planning to drive to L.A. Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm maybe 45-60 minutes away if you're driving. Admission to Disneyland is $65. Call the parks for info on operating hours because they are on winter hours which is usually from 8a-5p. EditedToAdd: BTW doc, I got these aches and pains..........

Wild Animal Park is neat to see.
Gaslamp quarter - Dicks Last Resort is/was a fun place, haven't been in it since 1998 Ocean and Pacific Beaches are cool, especially at night if the water is all phosphorescent. Hot strippers in SD if you are so inclined. Cheetahs!

Willdo. Myself and the boss, (an O-5 vascular surgeon) will hit the gaslamp district for the superbowl and then start invesigating the other suggestions. Thanks for the input. I spoke on the phone to my 5 year old today and she told me to wear all my camoflague so that the "bad men don't get you." Man, I miss that kid... and it's only been 2 weeks. |

I went onto the Navy base with a friend of mine. We were in BDUs. Went up to the ship sentries, asked if we could look around the ship. The OOD would detail some ensign or some such to show us around. We ended up in the crawlspaces of a Tico, and a more 'generic' tour of an Arleigh Burke, amongst others.

Lion Country Safari has been gone for close to 20 years now. However the San Diego Wild Animal Paark is about 10 miles east of you on 78 and well worth visiting.
The greenery you see is iceplant and a few scrub trees, Pendleton is going to go back to all brown in a few days if they don't get anymore rain. As of yesterday, they had at least 1 XD45 at the Exchange. (If it had been a 5" version. It might have been taken out of circulation in a manner of speaking, and I'm a died in the wool 1911 fan.) Old Town Mexican Cafe is one of the best places in Old Town. Carnitas are fantastic. They don't have the bubbling fermenting salsa at the tables anymore. I had the ribs and rotisserie chicken special last night. Gonna go back for more. Cantina or cafe food. Casa de Bandini is fancier food but damn good. Casa De Pico was tourist crud, ok but not terribly realistic Definitely go to Balboa Park. Several of the Museums are very good including the Model Railroad Museum, probably the finest in the country, the Air Museum is pretty good, I don't know if the timing is right but seeing a Shakespeare play at either the Old Globe or outdoor stages is a lot of fun. 4 wheeling back into the Anza-Borrego is fun. |

No offence to Warlord, but I would hit SeaWorld long before trekking to LA to visit Disenyworld. SeaWorld was $50.00 for an all-day pass but if you visit every attraction, it will take most of the day. Becasue SeaWorld is owned by Anheiser-Busch, the food inside the park is reasonably priced and decent quality, IMO. I got more soaked during the dolphin show than the killer whale show. It's advertised as being the other way around.

San Diego Wild Animal Park is runned by the same organization that run the SD Zoo. The weather here in So. Calif is extremely nice for winter time. Temps are in the high 60s to low 70s and its sunny. |

The military discount (free in uniform,) went away a long time ago at Disneyland. You can get Military Discount tickets at the MWR outlets, I don't think you can at the park itself. But rumor has it some of the guys working the tollbooths will at least comp you free parking.  It's too late now, but it looks like everybody in southern California had the same idea, "Hey everybody will be watching the game. Let's go to Disneyland." Go on a Friday if you can, the fireworks shows are weekends only right now, and it is a great show. |
