First I think every child lost is a shame and Im not trying to downplay a unfortunate death.

statistically what is more dangerous to children than firearms. Because I know firearm related fatalities are just a narrow slice of the pie, but often get blown out of proportions.

anybody have any numbers?

My vote is car accidents and swimming pools/drowning

Backyard swimming pools.

10x more likely to kill a kid than a gun.

I ran the numbers myself using the CDC web tool.

IIRC swimming pools is the #1 cause of deaths for children under like 10 or so.

still have those numbers?

The problem is, the term 'children' includes people up to 18 (and sometimes 21). There's a lot of gangbangers in that group.

"Real" children get killed by firearms pretty rarely.

5 gallon buckets. Little kids fall headfirst and drown in them, more than are killed in accidents with firearms.

a chimpanzee in a daycare could be our disastrous

According to the book, "Freakonomics*," swimming pools are FOUR HUNDRED times more dangerous than guns.

*Freakonomics is an interesting book; it demonstrates that, while there are plenty of things to be frightened of, we (society in general) are afraid of the WRONG things. Pools > guns is just one example. It is an intresting read.

Don't forget about killer strollers, either.

It doesn't matter what the facts are........people will use whatever "tool" they can to push their agenda.

Dihydrogen Monoxide levels in pools, actually. Not the pools themselves.

Sounds menacing, don't it? Do you know about this awful substance?

In the book "The Conservative Handbook" it states that in 2006 twice and many children were murdered with bare hands as were murdered with firearms.

Listed in order:

1. auto accidents
2. stairs / falls
3. household cleaning products / poisoning
4. fire
5. drowning
6. choking on food / objects
7. medical complications

All these cause more accidental deaths than firearms

I don't have any exact numbers but I'm sure the dangerous chemical Dihydrogen Monoxide has killed more children than firearms have.

I've always maintained we have some of the smartest individuals out there.

I'm surprised that the FDA, DEA, FBI, Homeland Security and FEMA haven't tried to outlaw or regulate Dihydrogen Monoxide yet. In some ways, maybe they have.

I know! Maybe the Obamanator can come out with some new Government Funded program that Chuckie, Nancy, Ted & Barbara can co-sponsor that the Sheeple will surely be in support of. It could be added to our new medical benefits package, shouldn't cost more than 8 trillion. A drop in the bucket, so to speak.

If the case where examined most of the child deaths by firearms. Come from 1. The parent not watching the child. 2 They never teach there child what a gun can do and the safety around it. 3. Parents fooling around stupidly with guns and including there children. My son has better gun safety than most teenagers.

Not to hijack, but on a similar note, here's some ammo you can use the next time you hear some liberal start spouting off about the streets running red with blood because of "assault weapons"...

...you have a statistically greater chance of being electrocuted by your own toaster than you do of being killed by a maniac with an assault weapon.

What's worse, is it's commonly found in the presence of hydrogen hydroxide, arguably just as dangerous.

Yeah, that instantly popped into my head. Swimming pools are way more dangerous with kids around than guns.

This and backyard pools. A 3 year old in my parents area just drowned in a pool. Dad and grandma were supposed to be watching him.
