VAIL – Police describe it as a “miracle”. A 4-year-old survived a car crash in Vail following a carjacking and kidnapping.
The incident started in West Vail when Marisa Pena left her 15-year-old nephew and 4-year-old daughter in her 1995 Plymouth Neon while she went into a fast food restaurant.
The car was left running while Pena ran inside to pick up a pizza.
Police say Jose Clara, 24, of Edwards approached the car, made threatening statements and ordered the teen to get out. The teen tried to remove his cousin from the back seat but was unsuccessful. Clara stole the car and drove out of the parking lot, hitting two vehicles. He headed westbound on I-70. Two minutes later Clara ran into the back of a slow moving semi truck in Dowd Junction.
Witnesses say he was going about 90 miles an hour.
Clara was killed instantly. Four-year-old Shania Barela of Minturn was riding in a safety seat and survived suffering just minor scratches and bruises. The driver of the semi truck was not injured.
Pena says she is thankful her daughter survived the ordeal and is encouraging parents to be diligent using child safety seats.
Toxicology tests are pending as police continue the investigation.
