So I was in the debriefing lounge with my iPad reading an article on PJMedia (linked from Drudge) about some 10 year old jihadi when all of the sudden my iPad locks me requires me to enter my Apple ID and password because 'the owner of this iPad has activate the find my iPad feature.'

But I am the owner of this iPad and I did no such thing. Has anyone else ever had this happen?

I'd call an apple store.  I've got an ipad and have no idea what my apple id is or how to get it.

This is why you do not use password1 for your password.

I was considering this as a possibility. I don't know what they could get though. I have iCloud turned off, so no naked selfies. Could they get my CC#? Do I need to cancel my card again?

Phishing pop-up?  Did you actually type in your password?

It wasn't a pop up. It literally wouldn't let me do anything else on my iPad. It was the activation screen/app for certain.

A girl I worked with had her ID hacked in an airport.  By the time she landed at home, she had around $1k in movie purchases on her account.

Does anyone in your family share the itunes acct and use iphones?
My wife, kids and I all have iphones plus a couple of ipads. We all share the itunes acct and can locate each other.
If your family does too then one of them is looking for it-especially since it's old. They may have decided to find it and use it.
That being said the find my iphone/ipad app doesn't lock our devices. It only finds them, but there are options for a lost device and to lock it.

I'd immediately enter my custom built Faraday man cave, thereby disabling any WiFi/Bluetooth signals and enter my password.

It's the only way to be sure.

I changed my password and I saw that there aren't any new authorized devices on my account. I also saw that there weren't any new purchases on my account in several days (the last time I bought a song).

I'll keep an eye on it, but I think I'm OK.

Never had that happen but I've had random 'official looking Apple messages' about having to enter a password a few times in the 2 years I've had my current phone.

Cant remember if it was my Iphone or my Galaxy but one of them locked up one day so I stopped into the Tmobile store.
As soon as the guy looks up my phones seriel or whatever he asks kind of hatefully where I got this phone because its been reported stolen.
I look at him with the googly eyes and say right in this store, look around and point out an employee, thats the guy who helped me.
Guy goes gets other guy,yep verifies he remembers me and selling me the phone. Digs into the system for the first guy and sees my numbers all match.
Someone somewhere fat fingered a number or two and caused mine to gel locked instead. Took about three days for the corporate security side to get it unlocked for me.
