According to the latest General Social Survey, 32 percent of Americans either own a firearm themselves or live with someone who does, which ties a record low set in 2010. That's a significant decline since the late 1970s and early 1980s, when about half of Americans told researchers there was a gun in their household. The General Social Survey is administered by NORC at the University of Chicago, primarily using in-person interviewing |

I would have told the government of the 1970s I had a gun.
This one? Nope. Boating accident got them all. |
|
So interviewing in-person, does that mean inside Chicago? Because if so, that's the last fucking place you want to survey about gun ownership.

More people for me to sell to during shtf. More easy victims of crime so they don't bother me. Win win.

I remember someone writing a letter in the Economist a while ago, debunking this claim.

In related news new nationwide phone poll indicates people withhold information and even fabricate information for phone polls.
Extensive data generated from calling college dorms. |

We're witnessing record sales but ownership is down...Uh huh, right.

Yes, because people always tell the government the truth when asked if they own guns. Every time.

I would have thought the numbers are now doubled. View Quote They probably are. Most people are probably not telling the truth with all the fear about gun grabbing / registration nowadays. I know if some random person called me or stopped me on the street with a clipboard asking me about gun ownership I would tell them either no or I am not interested. |

I hope you mean Financial SHTF and not an actual SHTF... I wouldn't tell someone like that I own a gun either View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

The important thing to remember here is that if someone asks you about or expresses an interest in firearms, you need to act like as big of a jerk as you can. |

People have learned that the gov't tracks everything and keeps it forever to later use it against you.

I addressed this in a presentation I gave in school. The GSS says (frequently) that ownership is down, but Pew has found more women and Democrats owning guns. Having seen way more women and minorities at the range in the past few years I have to conclude that the GSS is biased. |

Real nice guy but not real bright. He asked me about guns and I told him that I lost them all in the main channel off our coast, horrible boating accident. Damn near lost the dog too hell I'm lucky to be alive and all of that. He is still bugging my daughter for details some 5 years later. |

On numerous occasions, I've seen the argument that 'normal people' aren't buying guns, and the crazed right-wing nutjobs are responsible for the jump in sales. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I know too many "normal" folk with a few put away in their closets (some are die-hard Dems, gasp). |

I am a Hispanic living in a 99% White rural area of New Jersey.
Quite often , I am asked to participate in phone surveys to complete the township's demographics. Whenever the question of guns in the house comes up, I have a standard reply: I hate guns!! But I hate guns because I spend too much money on ammo, more guns, scopes, matches, training classes and travelling. |

6 years ago, I was the only one in my office with guns. Today, we are six for six. Two of the six have adult kids. Of the 5 adult kids, all now also have firearms in their homes.

If you look at the time series data you'll see huge swings in the percentage of households reporting owning a gun over the space of a couple years. The turnover of households year to year isn't all that big--most of the households in survey A will still be around in survey B a couple years later.. So to believe them one would have to buy into the idea of a significant percentage of the households getting rid of all the guns they own in just a few years, or a massive percentage of the households buying a gun.

You know what's funny? Gallup has done the same poll, and found that gun ownership has either increased or remained the same (I can't remember which). The theory is that people actually trust the Gallup name, so they're more likely to tell the truth. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

1. Who participates in these surveys anymore? Certainly not normal people.
2. Would a normal person these days ever admit to a stranger they have firearms? Nope. |

So these are the repetious lies liberals love.
Less gun owners every year. Guns are not the solution. A criminal will take you gun and use it against you. You are more likely to be injured by a gun in your house. Continue.... |

Also reported was the fact more Americans than ever, nearly 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of respondents, admit giving fewer than one correct answer to the survey questions.

Far more households own a gun than that
I would guess 70% or more of homes own a gun if you did not count places like California and other similar gun hating areas. I do not even know a single household here in Ohio that does not own at least a pistol. I just can not imagine how insecure it would feel having no ability to protect my family if a guy showed up at the door with a gun and bad intentions. |
