In YOUR opinion, what are the greatest firearms of all time, picking one per category?
Best pistols (Categories revolver, semi-auto, and other) Best rifles (bolt action., semi-auto, auto, other) Best shotguns (semi-auto, pump, double, etc) And so on. Pick as many as you like, but just one per category, please. My picks: Revolver: Colt Peacemaker, for its historical relevance. Semi-auto pistol: Colt 1911 Shotgun, semi-auto: Browning Auto 5 Shotgun, double: I've gotta go with the Browning Citori O/U. Rifle, bolt action: I'd have to go with the Winchester Model 70, pre-'64. Rifle, semi-auto: I'm partial to the AR-15. The Garand would be my backup pick. Heavy MG: Browning M2 HBAR. Ma Deuce. No opinion on any categories I didn't list. John M. Browning's work is heavily represented, obviously. I just don't think that there has ever been a firearms designer that has been his equal. Your turn. CJ |

Revolver:+1 Peacemaker

I'd have to +1 everything but the garand. It was a fine weapon, don't get me wrong..but I believe the AK-47 did more to change history than the garand did. The garand won WWII and had a place in Korea as well..but the AK has a very robust history as well. |

I have to say the AK-47 cause it's been around so long. Plus you will always see an AK on the battlefeild. But I think the new Great firearm of the future is gonna be the HK G36. I like the 5.56 round and I'll take the HK Mark 23 .45!

AK
ETA: There are many others that I'd rather have, but one can certaianly argument the fact that it is the most ''well rounded'' of fire arms and I would certainly agree that its effectivenes in battle cosequentially is second to none. |

I agree with everything on that list. LWilde is a genius! |

I'm going to start back a little further.
The Pennsylvania Long Rifle ,AKA The Kentucky Longrifle. As a Pennsylvanian and someone with ancestors who produced it during and following the Revolution, I think it deserves a mention at least. Not many firearms could come close to it's accuracy or range in that period. Sure other firearms far outnumbered it ,but it allowed marksman in the Continental Army to consistantly kill British soldiers at distances further than they had ever heard of a rifle accomplishing. More modern ? The Kalishnakov . None else are even close. Yeah ,it's not ours. Give credit where it's due . |

Oh, sure! Just stroke the Mustang why don't you? That loud scraping sound you hear is LWilde trying to get his massively swollen ego through his internet connection! The Professor has obviously never dealt with an LDO. |

I have to be subjective on this one. ... Just for conversations sake. What History did the AK have a part in that made a change in the world ? I can really think of none . It has been a very good carbine for our foes. Where the Garand did not win WWII and Korea it surely did give our boys a very reliable robust rifle to kill the enemy with and gave them a faster fire than the enemy had at the time with a standard rifle being compaired. It's been said before. I'll say it again... " The M1 Garand has a SOUL" .. It speaks..... Just listen............ "Semper Primus " WarDawg |

|
|
I know the 1911 is loved by many, but it is really hard to justify it being the greatest of all time.
|
|
No, not really that hard at all. |

Let's hear it. |

Easy...name me one other over 80 year old handgun design that's still used in combat by active military units. The gun has been made by dozens of manufacturers, and literally thousands of custom makers and smiths. It's used in combat, in combat-style competition and in target style competition and regularly brings home the gold in both of the latter. It's sold probably hundreds of thousands of copies in its history and is still carried for defense by some police, many civilians and those military operators that are allowed. It's much harder to make a case that it ISN'T the greatest handgun of all time. |

Faithful service as the official sidearm of the U.S. military for 75 years, through two world wars and countless smaller ones? Possessed of ergonomics and balance considered by many to be perfect? Gifted to us by God via John Mose? Dunno, might be a bit of a stretch. |

Hey, this is all about what YOU think are the most significant firearms. It's about sharing opinions. Trying to hammer someone for not sharing your opinion is not really what this is about.
My picks do reflect a somewhat limited knowledge of firearms. There are many that have been mentioned here that I wouldn't recognize if you threw them at me. And many more that the same thing can be said of. That's an interesting point about the AK: To rephrase it, the AK has never been used to WIN a war against US and other countries that use non AK designs. You MIGHT say it's the preferred weapon of the armies that are about to LOSE. But not due to any flaw with the AK. Due to flaws with the readiness of the armies in question. We've never gone toe to toe with the AK-equipped armies that might have a really good chance of handing us our asses. Fortunately. CJ |

I hope Im not comeing across as being an ass when I ask this. Im not.Just trying to broaden our conversation alittle. So I will ask again. How and when did the AK help or played a part of History as a change like we are talking about. Nazi Germany being beaten was a Change. Very big Change. Korea was a slap to the communist that was over running the South .It showed the UN wasn't a paper tiger. It helped set up change in Communist thinking habit's about the WEST and what we would do. I know alot of political stuff could be added in there. Im talking about the over all rifle that made a big impact that swayed change in one form or another. The AK I can't say did that. It's agreat weapon. I have many. I don't know everything.... So Im asking how and where??? WarDawg |
