My favorite part of the article:

Robert Dale Owen would say of the failed socialism experiment that the people at New Harmony were "a heterogeneous collection of radicals, enthusiastic devotees to principle, honest latitudinarians, and lazy theorists, with a sprinkling of unprincipled sharpers thrown in," and that "all cooperative schemes which provide equal remuneration to the skilled and industrious and the ignorant and idle must work their own downfall, for by this unjust plan, they must of necessity eliminate the valuable members and retain only the improvident, unskilled, and vicious

New Harmony was established by the Rappites. I grew up near there.

The 'roofless church' is pretty weird. Lots of weddings held there.

Interesting that Owen conceived of it essentially as a fortress:

That's a castle, minus a keep, with one wall of the moat prebuilt.  And it sounds like he would have run afoul of state authorities eventually with his intolerance of established religions.  If he hadn't gone bankrupt I wonder how long it would have been before he had twelve ten-year old wives and the state militia burned it down.

It is. In fact there's now an Inn and Convention Center affiliated with the Red Geranium.
