Are they cool or do they suck?

Great old classic music. Especially Aqualung. Strange lyrics but great music.
Thats right they were THE Best heavy metal band of 1989 |
Always loved them. I still play Aqualung (vinyl) once in a blue moon.
Deej, I saw Jethro Tull in April 1980 in the Frankfurt Festhalle (sp).
They were grand! I have the ticket stub in a picture frame.. |
Great band, saw them live last year. Even though they're older now they can still play very well. They played the entire album Aqualung live, plus several other tracks.
I also saw Yes in the past year or so. For being geezers those guys -really- rock, Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman can still play like mad. |
Yes = 2nd greatest band EVER. (1st is The Moody Blues, of course) More on topic, I listen to 'Aqualung' fairly often. Great album. |

Ian Anderson rocks absolutely a Talented man IMO

Recently I figured out the real difference between the bands that were big in the past vs. modern bands, and Tull is no exception:
Listen to most modern music. It's a SIMPLE chord progression, sometimes as simple as two chords. Take away the lyrics and what's left is BORINGLY simple, utterly without imagination or creativity. And the lyrics aren't much better in most cases. Then listen to this older stuff, PARTICULARLY stuff from the 70s and 80s, and it's SO different. It's complex, has variety in the song, many more chord changes, different voicings of chord structures are explored, and if the singer dropped dead before he started, the songs would still be interesting to listen to. I wish modern bands would figure this out. Simplicity is fine for basic "tribal music" but I want some variety in the song. But then again, I don't mind some straight-ahead three chord rock-n-roll, either. Variety is good. And there's not much to be found in a lot of popular music today. Trying to play Tull songs can be an adventure that challenges the limits of your chord vocabulary. This is a good thing. CJ |

Awesome...!...
But then again I'm a big fan of " Hawkwind " ... Cheers Taffy |
The problem with Tull was that Aqualung was so good it overshadowed all their other good stuff.
Like Thick as a Brick. Thanks to CDs and internet downloads you young'uns will never be able to appreciate a full-sized album cover like that. |
I put on South Side of the Sky after I posted that. The guitar work on this song is just great. |

Locomotive Breath and Cross-eyed-Mary are two of my favorites, along with Aqualung...
Still a Fan! Bryan |
Some of us youngings agree, and started to buy LP's just to display their beautiful covers. Gow could you not love ZeppelinIII and Physical Graffiti? Ive got every Zepp album on LP and a bunch more. Havnt added to the collection in a long time though. (I caught something called BRD) ETA: some bands still release LP's if you go to the right |

I love the piano interlude. Hell, the whole 'Fragile' album kicks ass. - I've got 'Aqualung' playing right now, though. ETA - OMG PAGE 2, ETC, ETC |

I've seen them five times, that ties Rush for me, I'll see them again if they come into town.
Great band. |
Cross Eyed Mary is also my favorite Jethro Tull song.
HOWEVER - When I saw them in concert they covered Kashmir by Led Zeppelin and it was insane! The whole amphitheater went crazy, nobody was expecting to hear that of all songs. They had a violinist named Lucia Micarelli play the vocal part on her violin, it was amazing. In fact, here's a link to a video of it: Tull plays Kashmir |

I saw Tull when they were doing their Thick as a Brick/ Aqualung tour. The roadies were running around on stage wearing black Mac's (raincoats). Then some were picking up and tuning the instruments etc. And the band JT turned around wearing the same black Mac's and started their first set. We didn't even know they were on stage till they started their first song. What showmanship. |

SUCK...
In retrospect it's hillarious they upset Metallica for best metal band... and fitting. |
I saw Tull a few years back. I am 29, I started to listen to Tull on my fathers record player when I was younger. My favorite album has to be Thick as a Brick.
i liked the original tull, then the lead guitar guy mick abrahams went off to form blodwyn pig. early tull was something more like old brit blues.
tull after was good too, just not quite my cup of tea... talk about old brit groups.. the original fleetwood mac was a great old blues brit band too.. completely different from what most folks know about fleetwood mac. |
+1 listen to FM's double album the Vintage Years, they recorded Black Magic Woman before Santana did. |
Well, I owned the album at one time (Thick As A...)
I spent a few minutes searching, but can't find an online pic that really does the dust cover justice. |
Jethro Tull is a great band, but Ian Anderson, like the Dixie Chicks, needs to shut up and play.
That begs further explanation. |
First concert i ever went to was JT, Warchild tour, Lakeland civic center FL. to this day that's still the best show i have ever seen.
One of his idiotic Global Warming sermons: http://www.j-tull.com/news/diaries/iaja2007.html I can't find his rude remarks about the US, Americans and Iraq on the internet, but I remember them. |

Interesting...I'll search. |
