I came across some old polaroids (hotline hotlink for the millennials) of a bug I worked on back in the day. It was a super sleeper. Obviously a lot of custom work done. My favorite part was that the exhaust dumped under the car but they had little pipes tigged in that ran out the stock location. It almost sounded like a VW when it was idling.

Did you keep the little 1300 engine in the rear so when you raced and won, you could open the rear and show them the normal engine?

No, the fuel cell was back there. That would be hilarious though.

There were some local guys in Orlando in the 80's that had a NHRA winning VW bug . They also owned a local shop. They would hang the winning running gear into a customer body and flat tow it to just down the street and ease it in for street races . It was quick and never the same color twice .
