In a terse statement late Tuesday evening, the White House blasted the so-called "Amash Amendment" that would limit the National Security Agency's ability to collect data on personal phone communications, calling the program crucial to national security.
...
The amendment is one of several the House of Representatives will consider to the 2014 Defense Appropriations Bill. It was introduced by Rep. Justin Amash, a libertarian Republican from Michigan, and has earned bipartisan backing from, among others, Reps. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.). Conyers is a co-sponsor.

The amendment would prohibit the funding of phone metadata collection without a FISC order indicating that the collection pertains to a specific investigation of an individual. Essentially, that eliminates NSA chief Keith Alexander's "collect the whole haystack" approach to data mining, at least of phone metadata.

The NSA held a "top secret" meeting with members of Congress to lobby against the amendment. The vote could take place as early as Wednesday evening.

Is Amash 35 years old????  He might need conscripting into higher office provided he can sufficiently stow the religiosity when it counts.

Vote is today.

Slashdot has a good article to get you started  (LINK), with a link to the EFF's Find Your Representative's contact info page.

According to the slashdot article, there are two amendments.  The Amash amendment is the real deal. The other one, Nugent's, is a sandbagging decoy.  To be very clear, the Amash amendment is the one that does something.  The other one does nothing.

The vote is today.

Drink your coffee and get hot.

The fact that Congress needs to take action to begin with is a slap in the face of the American people.
