WASHINGTON - Senators writing an immigration bill broke from the House’s get-tough approach by refusing Monday to make criminals of humanitarian groups or individuals who help illegal immigrants as more than a thousand immigration rights activists rallied outside the Capitol.

The Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., that would protect church and charitable groups, as well as individuals, from criminal prosecution for providing food, shelter, medical care and counseling to undocumented immigrants.

“Charitable organizations, like individuals, should be able to provide humanitarian assistance to immigrants without fearing prosecution,” Durbin said.

There is more backbone in a can of sardines than the whole federal government combined.

If you choose not to concern yourself with who you are helping then I dont see why it should be a crime.

If some random person decides to help out someone else and they choose not to inquire about thier background why should they be punished if that person turned out to be a criminal.

IIRC in Texas you can only be charged with aiding and abetting a felon if you actively lie to the authorities or warn the felon that the police are heading to his present location or something like that.

If you simply give the police no info and do not warn the felon then you have not committed a crime. You can house and feed them all you want.

True, but there are many "charitable" groups and individuals who facilitate and aid illegal immigration. They know EXACTLY who they are helping, they don't have to ask.

its up to the people to fix this.  Join groups like the Minutemen and make your numbers known.  You can contact your Reps but if you want this fixed, its going to take people in the streets in the numbers like you are seeing right now for the other side.

Don't expect to see the average American in the street protesting about illegals.  They just plain don't care.  They are too wrapped up in american idol and NASCAR.  The only time they will be outraged and demand that someone else do something, is when there are no more english language television stations.

by that logic, if you hire someone no questions asked it would be OK if they were illegal.  there should be zero tolerance for aiding and abetting a criminal, including an illegal immigrant

You are sooooo right. And the politicians will never admit what it costs us to foot the bill for illegal aliens. What do they care? We're paying the freight. It's amazing how they're so qualified to spend our money.
