a russian made -74 is a fine weapon. The only AK varient that interests me.
|
|
I had one. I found it to be very superior to the 47. It shot better and was more pleasant to shoot.
Still did not have the accuracy of the AR, but it was much better than 7.62 x 39. |

They're sexy.
I almost bought a 74 clone a few months ago until I started mag shopping. |

View Quote The GP25 and GP30 are cool and all, but I've seen pictures of people shooting themselves in the hand while loading them. |

I'm glad I bought a ton of E German bakelites years ago for like $6 when 5.45 wasn't popular yet. Same with the Bulgarian & Russian ammo. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Just consider it a "fun gun" and drop the notion of needing 87 mags for it. I'm glad I bought a ton of E German bakelites years ago for like $6 when 5.45 wasn't popular yet. Same with the Bulgarian & Russian ammo. As of a few years ago, I had over 100 Russian, EG, and Bulgarian 5.45 mags. I only ever actually used the same 5 and ended up selling the majority. |

Arsenal SLR-104FR is my go to. I'll skip right past the BCM and Colt.

I'm more than pleased with my Arsenal SGL-31 Russian 5.45 AK.
That little round really made that platform shine. That rifle got me interested in AKs again which also drove an interest on the VZ-58 |
|
never did grab one though I have a supply of the ammo including 7N6
I do have a Spikes 5.45x39 upper that's been in the box since I bought it years ago. |
|
Awesome rifles. I regret ever selling mine- but it never ran right (Waffenwerks).
I will be buying a good one this year upcoming. |

I've always liked them.
There was/is a video out there from the Soviet's time in AFG that followed a Spetsnaz unit around. At one point they locate a group of Mujahideen patrolling in file and set up an ambush. You watch them (The Mujahideen) walk right into the KZ and the Russians just open up on them (They [The Russians] didn't initiate the ambush with a "Casualty Producing Device" [Claymore/Grenade/RPG] Just '74's). Very quick and efficient. |

Reminds me that I need to get some pretty wood handguards for mine.

I have tons of cheap mags and 7n6; haven't priced them lately as I have no need for any more...of either. |

I kinda want a Molot VEPR in 5.45. View Quote I have both the 7.62 and the 5.45... picked up a few 5.45 bakelite Russian mags from Aim a few days ago...sexy as all hell... I think the Vepr is the best AK... just had to add the bullet guide and a little filing on the mag retainer. $699 for either caliber. I have a ton of 7n6 and its much fun to shoot. They have the furniture correct version for about $1000 now... |

Quality Russian Tula or Izhmash or Bulgarian Circle 10 mil mags are super reliable. $30 if you creep the various EE around. I've got a stash but will almost exclusively use and abuse my cheap $8 Tapcos and they run just fine. Not one issue with 1000s downrange during games and range time. Bad time occurs the Circle 10s and Tulas come out.
If Magpul ever gets their act together and can produce and DELIVER a solid alternative to the Tapco there is that positive. |

Yeah.... I totally broke down & bought a SLR104FR before the election. Glad I did, fun little rifle. The cost of mags sucks, but the ammo is cheap, so there's that. I finished my M4A1 clone a bit ago & felt I needed to have a good representation of an AK74M to go with it

I wasn't looking at them 5 years ago. 'guess I'm late to the game since they went nuts. I remember buying them for $3-$4 back when I had a couple '74's. View Quote Yeah, back in the Sar2 and $130 kit days they were super cheap. They started to climb in the late 00's and settled in the $30-$40 dollar range. |

I'd get one in a heartbeat if not for the 7n6 ban Why I got rid of mine Don't let that stop you. Silver Bear and Wolf and Wolf Mil Spec Lacquer sealed are GTG. 7n6 is more accurate, but I don't miss worrying about the corrosive cleaning aspect. SB and Wolf are just as accurate as the cheap brass .223 ammo. Their are still plenty of 7n6 tins floating around. Find a couple and stash them. Shoot the commercial. |

My friend randomly gave me 200 rounds of Wolf 5.45 one day, I'm itching to get a rifle for it . I really am intrigued by the round. I missed the salad days of ammo and mags but I do really want to get a -74 some day.

Had a Polish Tantal by Interarms, was one is the more fun guns to shoot, but I got rid of it for more AR stuff after the cheap 7n6 was banned.
Felt dirty owning a commie influenced rifle. |

Overrated. The commercial stuff is just fine. $30-40 for used surplus mags though, ouch. I had my kit for a while before I actually built it. The mags were going for $7 each and I thought, naw I don't even have it finished yet.... |

After shooting mine, I was a bit more worried about being shot at by one of them. They will reach well beyond 300M. Though not an AR they are much better than the 47 when it comes to accuracy. I enjoy shooting mine. I do need to hold on to my 7n6 and get some more wolf.

the days of unissued EG mag sets for $12 were great days
pouch 4 bakelite mags strippers/spoon cleaning kit blank firing adaptor sling had 20 of these sets and 3 crates of 7n6 before I got an SAR2 |

Good weapon, mine shoots faster and more accurate if I have a cigarette dangling out of my mouth while pulling the trigger.

My favorite AK-I especially enjoy the 5.45X39 mm cartridge it's chambered for.
I don't really have any interest in anything in 7.62X39. I'm just weird that way I guess. |

If I can ever get my hands on one for a reasonable price I'll get it.

Magpul is supposed to be making ak74 mags. I don't know if they are available yet or not.
