I hear a lot of people speculate that it was a nuclear war. I would find that hard to believe due to the atmospheric conditions. I'm pretty sure even a full exchange wouldn't dirty the atmosphere so heavily for so long. I'm thinking either something collided with earth (like an asteroid) or Yellowstone blew. Even though there is no clear answer in the book, what do you speculate?

I just assumed it was an asteroid.

what event are we talking about here?

Doesn't he talk about getting into the bathtub after seeing the flash? That made me think it was a nuclear exchange.

The book does not mention what happened. I beleive this is intentional. Fill it in with your nightmare scenario. Avoid the "It wouldn't really be like that" criticism.

IIRC< he said in an interview that he saw some hills after a wildfire and started witha "What if everything was like that".

No, he talks about filling it with water.

No, he filled the bathtub with water after it became clear "It" was happening.

There was an interview online I read about a month ago where a few of his friends who are astronomers and/or astro/physicists said that he frequently would asked them questions about the effects of an asteroid or comet impact on the earth.

I've heard the typical breathless liberal morons claiming it was "climate change"

There were several explosions and impacts in town before he filled the tub. Nobody gives a shit about radiation in the book, so I say asteroid strike(s).
