It was the perfect weapons platform in its' original configuration.

The only change I could see was the elimination of the carry handle to a flat top and the interchangeable forward handguards.

Were you at Sand Hill and did the Drill Sergeants call you "Captain Caveman"?

If so, I think I know you.

Barrel is to long and the stock needs to collapse for an actual fighting weapon.

Colt XM 15 IIRC, I am so old I don't even remember my MOS number anymore. I thought I did, but it just wound up being the battery for the PRC77 radios.

I loved the M16A1, I am going to have to build me a retro 20".

The armory in Minot had some Hydromatic rifles there in 2007... All converted into A2's. A couple rifles were even green tagged with triangle shaped charging handles...

I bet they had original M16's. I went through AF Basic as Prior Service (Army). They had original Slick side M16's with 22 conversion kits at Lackland. POS maximum.

In basic training a Colt(1989)

in the National Guard H&R I think it had a lion or something on the receiver.

When was that? When I went through basic at Lackland, they were definitely slick sided M16, but no 22 conversion, just regular 5.56.

I was issued some piece of crap M16A2 and like 10 seconds in my hand I asked can I have a different one....this thing is crap.... go away privet is what I was told ...... well at the end of BRM this worn out weapon was one impressive shooter. to be honest It was better than the M4 I was issued . I will always believe that the 100 parts that make an M16 is the greatest collect of parts ever assembled.

The beat to hell original M16 I shot in basic had no problems, no stoppages. I don't recall anyone else in my flight bitching about any problems, other than the one 'tard who put his on auto and ripped through what was in the mag.

Real
They X out everything when a mwo is applies to a individual platform and restamp it with whatever nomenclature change is required

Sometimes with burst/auto they x through and restamp over, and sometimes the inlet where the word was and insert a new metal blank with the update on it

Depending on how old the individual piece is it can have as many or more x's than it does words

Combustion caused by heat from the gas tube or a leaking gas block (it looks like something's blowing out the flames during firing)?

As much as I love retro rifles, and even with the flaws of the M4...

No.

For current warfare the M16A1 would not be a good choice for general issue.

As a support weapon sure, but try doing some CQB with one, it sucks.

For open terrain though, give me an A1 with an A2 rear aperture and I'm good.

I agree, nothing better than a chromed bolt/carrier/barrel 1/14 twist pencil weight gun.just as Stoner intended. Confirmed by project agile..
Only improvement needed was the flat top upper (and maybe free floating the barrel).

US ARMY 85-89 . M16 A1 in basic and 2 ea years in Germany. Came back state side and was issued a new M16A2 . I wanted my A1 back.... I built an A1 clone and love it. I own M4's an also a A2 ... If I could just have only one it's the A1 I would grab.... I realise the need for Flat tops. My eyes or older and sight has changed. But still love the old A1 ... Wardawg

Went to ft benning for BCT in 2008 where i carried an a4. in march when i arrived at ft gordon for AIT there is a week long field exercise before you start school. I was issued an A1, in March 2008. It was still in the original configuration with triangular handguards, non elevation adjustable rear sight and full auto (that suprisingly worked great with blanks)

It was in my opinion a much better balanced rifle than the A4. No rails up front for the cool guy shit but that rail must have weighed at least 20oz on the wrong end of the rifle.

In 2010 i went to ft dix for wlc and i was issued an a2 with a hydramatic reciever, and the rollmark looked exactly like the one posted earlier.
