GUNS IN FLORIDA WORKPLACES?
THAT IS THE GOAL OF THE NRA

Thanks in part to your emails and the outcry of the Florida business community, the Florida House Judiciary Committee has temporarily tabled HB 129, a Guns in the Workplace bill, that would force businesses in Florida to allow guns on their own privately held, business-owned property, whether they want to or not!

It now it appears that some members of the Florida business community are seeking a compromise with the NRA. There is no compromise that can protect the safety of workplaces in Florida.

This insane legislation is being advanced even though:

77% of workplace homicides are committed with firearms.
Murder is the leading cause of injury-related death for women in the workplace.
60% of major employers said in a 2005 survey that disgruntled employees had threatened to assault or kill senior managers in the last year.
A May 2005 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that workplaces where guns were permitted were 5 to 7 times more likely to be the site of a workplace homicide compared to workplaces where guns are prohibited. Read the study.

Probably regarding letting employees leave firearm related stuff in their cars so they can travel to and from work armed.

SUBJECT: HB-129 Protect Possession of Firearms in Vehicles in Parking Lots HELP protect the rights of all Floridians, out of state visitors and tourists who visit our state by motor vehicle and who carry firearms in their vehicles for protection and other lawful purposes. Some Florida businesses are trying to ban guns in cars. They are violating the constitutional rights of gun owners and Florida law. HB-129 protects your right to have a gun in your car for lawful purposes. HB-129 establishes penalties for these ARROGANT CORPORATIONS who think they can control what private property you have in your private vehicle.

Think about this.  If a business were to ban guns on their property (not just inside), then they could "trespass" you if you park your car in the parking lot with a gun in it.  That includes gas stations.

Last article I saw stated that the NRA lobbyists and the business lobbyists were considering "compromises" such as:

- Designating specific areas were only vehicles with firearms could be parked (that is one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard of)

- Have a weapons "check-in" inside the business where employees firearms would be locked up and secured by the business during their time at work.

The whole thing is pretty interesting because you have the NRA on one hand who contributes money to the Republicans and then you have the business-interest lobbyists who are major Republican contributors as well. A bunch of the GOP guys are stuck in the middle and don't know what to do on this one, they don't want to appear anti-gun/NRA but they also don't want to go against some of their largest contributors(the business community).

Any Floridian that can legally own a firearm. It is legal in Florida for non-CWL holders to carry a loaded firearm in their vehicle at all times, it just has to be snapped in a holster, in an enclosure like the glovebox/center console, or in a case or bag of some kind. It seems backwards but just about the only legal way (except for having it snapped into a holster) for someone without a CWL to transport a loaded firearm is to actually CONCEAL it in the vehicle.  

It has been my observation that employees that were "disgruntled" and threatening the bosses were not likely to obey a "no gun in the workplace" rule.  What is the penalty?  Being fired.

Well, these "workplace shooters" were either fired already, or don't care if they get fired.

So, another BS "workplace rule" is not likely to prevent shootings.  

But if a guy was going to go postal, and knew the boss carried, and the asst manager, and half the employees carried, I do believe he would be dissuaded from trying anything.
