I've seen shad do that in the rivers here in Illinois. Not nearly that many or that big though.

One educated guess from the father on the striped bass is that the heavy light attracted the bugs to the top of the water causing a feeding frenzy.

Strange video..not my preferred way to fish bit I'd try it once (where legal) just for the fun factor. Is the light making them jump?

now if they are brave enuff to try that for tarpon down here,,id pay for the gas in the boat!

I am about as far north as the Peacock Bass get. Most of them were killed off 2 yrs ago when we had a real cold week. They average around 5lbs for a big one. Nice fighters though.

I've had that exact same thing happen to me. I was living in Ky. My father in law had traded for a gas motor for the boat. I took the boat and motor out to a slough off of the Mississippi near Wickliffe, Ky. It had been a long hot summer and the water was very low. I get the boat in the water and rev the motor up all the way. I'm hauling ass across the water when I see a fish jump. I look over and notice more jumping. Then they started jumping all over the place. Into the boat, around the boat, over the boat. They were flying everywhere, and they weren't little. Some were 10+ pounds. I took a couple home, because I didn't know what they were. Turns out they were grass carp. The only thing I could figure out was that the prop for the motor was just above the mud on the bottom and it was scaring them out of the water. As soon as I'd cut the motor off they would stop jumping. Start the motor back up and they'd start jumping all over again. It was kind of neat, but I was covered in mud and fish slime.

I live right in the middle of the Peacock Bass country here in South Florida and they do get pretty big and I see larger ones every year. I live on a lake that Peacocks can survive the worst of our winter so I never seen them die off during winter like in some shallow lakes up north of us.

Largest Peacocks Bass I've caught on my lake was 8 lb. 12 oz. but my father caught one that went 11 lb. 4 oz. I've seen two or three that I think would have gone above 12 lb. easy.

I caught this one last summer and it was 4 lb.

Back to the topic...

I've seen school of bass push school of shad against the shore and attack. Few times I've seen bass get a little too aggressive in their attack and forget to turn off speed as they grab a shad and end up on the shore. They usually flop around for few seconds and then make it back into the lake but occasionally a small bass will get taken by storks an herons.
