1. Air Compressor. Pretty self explanitory.
2. HEAT!!!!!!!! Lets me use the garage thruout the year comfortably. A few years ago I picked up a almost brand new Reddy Heater with a 100K output for $50.00 at a garage sale. In about 5 minutes, I can work in my shirtsleeves even on a 10F day. Can't tell you how nice it is. 3. Welder. While I don't use it that much, when I DO need it, it's very nice to have. So what are your "best additions". |
|
1. Hydraulic car lift, bought and shipped for $2900. Took me about 4 hours to bolt it in and get it running. Use it all the time, even for the lawn mower!
2. Heater! |

Beer, refrigerator, tv and heat. In that order. kegerator |

I agree with the air compressor.
Drill press Bench Grinder A kick ass radio Steel table Vice Gun Safe Shelves! Lots of Shelves! Parts Washer Lockable tool room A/C running water fork lift Arfcom Flag Fridge |

My garage has a fridge, flatscreen tv, Satellite, Stereo, Computer, wrap around shelving, two workbenches, two toolchests, welder, plasma, drill press, bench grinder, compressor and an engine hoist in it. (Only a 2 car garage). And I manage to cram two trucks, engines and a bunch of truck parts in it. (Tight fit). |

Lights as mentioned before.
I am also a huge fan of Epoxy garage floor coating. just spray water, squeegee, and it's clean! Of course my garage is set up more for polishing and such as opposed to metal fab and welding so YMMV. |

good lighting, task lighting, and insulation. Ours has a flat roof and stuffing R30 in the rafters made a 20F difference in the summertime.
eta - grinder / buffer |
|
Heat, fridge, multiple workbenches, TV, Stereo, a compressor hooked up to a retractable hose, mounted on the ceiling which will reach any point in the Man Cave –– and a few feet outdoors. A ceiling mounted, centrally located, retractable drop light. A BIG ASSED vice mounted on a steel workbench.

Compressed Air Lines
Lots of overhead shop lights. Motion sensor linked internal light (lights go on when you open the door, nice to have) The Mighty Pegboard (love pegboard for holding stuff) 2x4 workbench (Seriously, those fiberboard benches from HD/Lowes/Sears would last 2.5 seconds) Rubber Coated Tool Hooks (The big ones that you can throw rakes, shovels, ladders, seeders, etc on) Open loft ofr spare wood. |
|
Build a heavy-duty workbench using metal decking/joist hangers, 2x4's and plywood.
Put in plenty of power circuits, both 120V and 240V, including shutoff switches, GFI. I'm building a home anodizing line in my garage. I have a drill press and hope to get a milling machine. Also, as I mentioned in another thread, see the Garage Journal Forum for lots of good ideas... |
|
Hell, I'd love to just be able to stop storing stuff in mine so I would have room to work on bigger stuff. (Just a month ago I had to turn down a great deal on a 1985 BMW R80RT and a parts bike that I could made into a nice bike, but I had no room!)

Insulation and walls.
I insulated my garage walls before sealing them in drywall. Keeps me warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer and the drywall helps too. |
|
More fluorescent lights.
A retractable hanging light in the center of the bay. And a hanging ball so my wife doesn't pull in too far. |
|
A BIG I BEAM WITH A GOOD CHAIN HOIST.
PIPE VISE MOUNTED TO A GOOD WORK BENCH. FORKLIFT LOTS AND LOTS OF CABINETS. BOLT BINS ONE METRIC AND ONE SAE. PEDESTAL GRINDER. CHOP SAW. TORCHES W/CART. MILES AND MILES OF PEGBOARD. ROTO BIN FOR PIPE FITTINGS. WELDER. PHASE CONVERTER. TOOL BOXES. AIR COMPRESSOR. PRESSURE WASHER. DESK W/ COMPUTER MUSIC. |

I don't have room for all the fancy shit only have a standard 2car garage. But I just installed a flat ng ventless heater and a retractable cord real mounted to the middle of the cieling. An old locker for all the flamable stuff. And a rol air compressor older than I am

Not as cool as yours but when we were remolding we had problems getting the construction equipment into the back yard. The solution was to put a garage door on the back side of the attached garage so they could get through. The best thing ever I wish I had done it years ago makes getting stuss in and out of the garage easy and if needed I can drive stuff into the back yard to drop it off.

Muscle cars. I would be lost without my 4X4 trucks and my Muscle cars. I have everything to work on them as far as tools go but they are no good without my cars/trucks.
|
|
Insulated garage doors.
Industrial carpet. Heat. This time'a year anyway. |
|
A good drain, so the blood has somewhere to wash out to.............
|
|
Quoted: Floor drain. And a bone saw, shovel... I plan on building a second 2 car garage to move all of the tools into. |
|
What type of heating do you guys suggest? Natural gas or an electric model? Gas heaters are cheaper, but they all require venting, no?

The last thing I picked up has been one of my favorites this winter, 150,000 btu kerosene heater. I have a pellet stove but it takes forever to get the chill out. that heater makes it good to go in 15 min.

A big-ass kitchen vent fan. I do a lot of woodworking and the paint/varnish fumes can really do a number on you.
|
|
A motorcycle.
When the 'rents remodeled their kitchen, they had all of the old cabinets left, so I had dad bring a few out here and we mounted some up in a corner in the garage. Looks a bit out of place, but I think I might get some of that metallic paint that magnets will actually stick to, and paint them all. Then I'd like to get a rolling tool box to put next to it. Also want to build or put a bench over on one of the sides to work on... will need to run some electricity over there since the jackass home builder only put in ONE outlet. |
|
Freezer, gun safe, 3 workbenches, one general purpose, one for reloading, one woodworking. Cabinet grade tablesaw, bandsaw, freestanding drill press, wood lathe, portable grinder cabinet with high speed, slow speed grinders, plus one belt drive with wire brush and polishing felt wheel. jig saw.
Air compressor, dedicated router shaper table, 8" long bed jointer, 15" thickness planer , Dust collector and heavy duty Miluwakee wet/dry shop vac I had insulated door installed, and ran heating and air conditioning in, so I can be comfortable all year. Just wish it were twice as large. |
|
My best addition was probably a shooting bench and the 100 yard range outside the door.
