Hey Gang.

If you're anything like me, you can never have too many guns. It starts when you are little. That first Daisy Red Rider BB was the beginning of the end for me for sure! LOL!
Now, anyone you likes messing with mechanical stuff and likes to shoot is bound to have some favorites in their collection, in fact, that very reason is probably the base on what you decide your new toy will be. Who ever said, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" couldn't have had guns in mind.

The basic collection I think consists of several key pieces: Long Gun, Carbine, Plinker, Shotgun, workhorse pistol, pride and joy pistol, and a good reliable backup. This is how my basic collection looks.

I'm a fan of tactical looking stuff which will explain my choices for this.

Long Gun. I'll never be no Sniper. I do like accuracy shooting, but haven't gotten into it to the point where Ive gone out and got me a Remington 700. My gun of choice? My Long barreled SKS. Iron sights. Scopes and such that mount to the upper reciever cover of the SKS are not worth a darn anyway. The cover itself moves, so how can you expect to keep a scope zero'd? The SKS isn't the most accurate gun out there, and doesn't have the ability to hit them FAR shots, but it's reliable and shoots further than my carbine. Besides...it's a gun I could tinker with alot.

Carbine. My old favorite just got replaced. My Carbine was my .30 caliber carbine. Like everything else, she was far from stock with her Synthetic stock, Vortex Comp, full rail Weaver barrel cover with Hakko heads up red dot site, heavy recoil spring and even a regular laser mounted under the barrle for low light shooting. The gun is light, smooth, and ultra reliable. A joy to shoot.
I decided to attempt at getting into the 21st century and got myself a Bushmaster M4gery and love it. I'm still getting aquainted to her, but so far so good. To be honest I don't shoot long distances and for my purposes, the .30 cal is a very competant weapon. The AR just looks better.hat
Shotgun. Remington 870. Good SOLID Home defense weapon. Very reliable, easy to manuver package.It is also highly modifiable and a joy to tinker with.

Workhorse pistol. Glock 17. I bought my first Glock 16 years ago, and she is still my 1st choice. While not as strong as a .40 or .45 I am very familiar with the gun, and this i consider a very important factor, maybe the most important for my choice.

My favorite project pistol. Colt Government 1911 .45 ACP of course. I have been "working" on my favorite for the last 6 years. Super Accurate and beautiful to boot. The 1911 is a great gun to project out. I've done alot of work on her myself and am very happy with the results.

Backup. Glock 26. I chose this gun because it uses the same caliber rounds as my primary (in fact can use the same mags, though I don't recommend it without the A&G adapters installed) gun. Legendary GLOCK reliability and performance. Both Glocks I have have Trijicon Nite Sites, the 17 having the original set it came from the factory with 16 years ago.hought

Thats a good start

Gotta have a Lugar

-  AR
- .308 autoloader
- .22 rifle
- Shotgun

- .45acp handgun
- Carry gun(or backup if .45 is your CCW)

Step 1: Get a AR of your preference. 20" Armalite M15a4 for me, whatever you like for you.

Step 2: Get a pistol in a 9mm, .38, .40, or .45 ACP. Whatever you like. I like the G17, but if you like the 1911, hey, go for it.

Step 3: Practice like a possessed mofo, and worry about building up the rest of the collection later.

One good rifle/carbine and one good pistol are enough. Too much time/money/effort is spent on the stuff, and not nearly enough on learing how to use it.

If I had a fire or something and forced to start over, just the basics...

.22 Lr (bolt or 10/22)
30-06(or.308) bolt gun
.357 revolver
12ga. pump

Lets see a basic gun collection is:

1. a wheel gun of 38 caliber or larger with at least a 4" barrel

2. a 12 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun

3. a scoped or iron sighted 30 caliber rifle  

4. a black magazine fed military pattern semi auto .224 caliber rifle

5. a  ruger 10/22 (of course)

6. a scoped 22LR pistol with at least a 5" barrel

7.  an ungodly accurate 9x19 or 45 acp semi auto pistol


This pretty much covers all the bases me thinks anything more is just padding

7 - will have to wait a few months, my next purchase is going to be a CMP Garand

These are my selections for a basic collection.
Long rifle: M1a

Carbine: Ar M4 type.

Shotgun: Remington 870 Marine magnum

Plinker: Ruger .22 or beretta Neo

Workhorse:Sig sauer 229 (if ya like aluminum frame) or Glock 22 (if ya like plastic)

Back up: S & W 642 airlite

At this point im still trying to accrue my basic collection but I am determined to make it happen!

I do it in ranges:

Long range: 50 BMG (Barrett 99)

Medium range: 308 (ARMALITE AR10)

Short range/CQB: 5.56 (COLT AR 11.5 in w/SF M961)

Backup: .45 ACP (SIG P220 with SFX200A)

CCW: 357 Sig (SIG P239)

This is a little more than a basic collection, but I think it has to include:


Long Guns
Hunting Rifles: Remington 700 BDL in .270 and .300 Winchester Magnum

Military Replicas: AR-15 and FN FAL

Shotguns:  Benelli Montefeltro Grade II, Benelli M4 Tactical Shotgun, Ruger Red Label (trap & skeet)

Plinkers: Ruger 10/22 (standard AND bull barrel varminter)



Handguns

Autmatic Pistol: Any .45 ACP - 1911 or Sig 220 preferred

Hunting Handgun:  Ruger Super Redhawk (.44 Mag) with optic

Concealed Carry:  Sig P239 (.40 S&W)

Practice/Plinker:  22/45 or Mark III

AR15-1 or more
1911-1 or more
Shotgun (12 ga.)

Very basic.

Any other weapons are just icing on the cake !

Sweet Jesus man! An SKS is one of the guns that matters to you most? That would only be valid if your Grandpappy brought it back from the Nam having torn it from the hands of a VC he killed with a shovel after being bayoneted through his thigh.

My idea of a basic collection:

Long Range "Sniper" rifle:  Working on it. Probably going with a Remmy 700 in .308
Semi auto rifle: Bushmaster M4gery
Shotgun: Ithaca 37
Pistol: Glock 19 with a Glock 26 as a backup

Everyone has to have a Rugar 10/22...just gotta.

My ideal collection includes 1 of everything that appeals to me , then getting more in different colors of the ones I really like .

I never thought of the SKS as valuable Bigdb1, just reliable. I like the 7.62 X 39 round. The SKS is probably the cheapest gun (stock) that I now own, yet, round after round she eats & spits out whatever I give her without complaint. I won't run cheap rounds through my other guns, but for the SKS I do. She's proven to be very reliable no matter what.

There are a few guns that are on my wish list that came up here, the Ruger 22/45 Mk III is one of them for sure.

A M1 Garand is another. Maybe a M1A, but I don't have enough cookies saved up yet.

I've owned a couple of wheel guns, but they just didn't peak my interest. I would however really like to get a Ruger Birdshead Vaquero somday. That is a really nice looking gun.

I was happy to see fellow Remington 870 fans out there. I have owned Mossbergs & Winchester pumps, but I have always come back to my trusty 870. Smooth action, tough gun. I have my 1100 but prefer the 870 to it.

My most FUN gun has to be the 10/22.

next on the list is a 1911 and a fn-fal when I move to AZ

1) Pump 12 gauge.  Good for almost everything.  Bird hunting, large game hunting with a slug barrel.  Home defense.  Trap shooting.  Winchester 120, or a Remington 870 (express or wingmaster) fits the bill.

2) Very reliable revolver.  A 4" GP 100.  Shoots .357 and .38 for practice.  Could be carried concealed if you were a glutton for punishment.

3) Big game centerfire rifle.  I would want Remington 700 bolt in 300 Win Mag.  A good scope is of course a must. A Winchester 94 would be an acceptable substitute if shots wouldn't get over 250 yards.

4) .22 rifle.  Any of the more reliable ones would be fine.  Allows you to stay proficient at rifle shooting cheap.

5) .45 auto.  It's just unamerican not to have one.  Make mine a Sig P220.

6) AR-15.  For when you have to kill absolutely every motherfucker in the room

7) Concealed carry pistol.  Snubby or semi, whatever you're most comfortable with.

Next in line would be a M1 Garand in 30-06. I haven't decided if the Mauser will stay as a 22-250. IMHO it would be better in .308 (back-up for M14) and to keep ammo requirements to a minimum.  The Remington 870, 1100 or Mossberg 500 would be better suited than the SPAS (IMHO). The SPAS seems to be finicky about ammo and its HEAVY but you gotta use what ya brung (and what ya have)!

Almost forgot to mention extra barrels for the 870 & 500 (combat/defense or hunting/survival)if you are so inclined (and have the extra change).

Substitute Garand for M1A/FAL, and add in a pump shotgun, and that is the basics for me.

Of course, I had a bit more than the basics before losing all my guns in a freak spelunking accident.

My AK and my P228 would be the last ones I would part with.  

A garand, a couple of AR's, FAL, and a 1911 are coming this year though.  No more fooling around, buying all the guns I can afford and still eat and pay rent.

Long Guns
Rifle:  Don't have one yet.  
Carbine:  Don't have one yet, though I would probably have the long gun cover it.
Plinker:  I cover this twice, with my Marlin 60 and my SIG Trailside.
Shotgun:  20 gauge Mossberg I bought from a friend.

Pistols
It's tough to categorize.  The Glock 30 is probably the workhorse (as well as my 9/11/01 memorial, bought on that terrible day), but I almost never carry it.  (Mrs B carries it.)

The Glock 23 is my "pride and joy", but it's also my daily carry pistol.

The NAA G380 is my backup gun, though I'll never get rid of my Glock 26 (my very first gun).  The 26 has been mostly replaced by the 23.  I hope it's not offended by that.


I like Glocks, but I hasten to say that the 1911 is also a fine weapon.  I just don't like how the 1911 feels when I hold or shoot one - and that's really the only reason I don't own one.  Mrs B feels the same way.

BTW, I prefer to have many calibers available.  My thinking is that if one caliber isn't available, another might be.  "The last guy bought all my 45.  All I have is 40 and a few rounds of 380."  I can still do business with him.

May I be so bold as to suggest trying a Sig P220 with a Hogue grip?  

I have one.  I liked the feel of the gun with the factory grips, shot it well, and it's accurate.  But I hated how the shiny plastic grips slipped in my hands if they got sweaty.  So I got the Hogue wraparound grip.  

Holy crap, this thing feels like it was born in my hands.  

Anyway, give it a shot sometime.  If you were closer I'd invite you to try mine.
