Pretty good movie.
I knew a bit about Hughes and it did a job of honestly portraying several people.
I always had the instinctive feeling Katherine Hepburn was a fucked up person and later found it to be true. The movie pretty well showed what a over privledged spoiled, self important bitch from a fucked up family of kooks she really was.
And I always felt Ava Gardner was a class act and the film showed that she was the best thing that ever happened to Hughes and to her credit wouldn't put up with his shit. By the way Kate Beckinsale as Gardner was worth the price of admission alone.
And in an additional bit if brilliant casting Alan Alda plays a shitbag, corrupt Senator on the take and Alec Bladwin plays the somewhat villainous head of Pan Am holding his leash.
I worried DiCaprio wouldn't be capable of pulling this role off but I think he nailed most of it. Hughes as a millionaire manic depressant with a severe case of OCD could have been easily fucked up by bad casting.
I think Beckinsale possibly upstaged him with her minor role or possibly it was just great casting. Or maybe I just thought she was really cute, who knows?
Anyway I think it is worth the price of admission as it is a well told story of an interesting person. Additional subtle plotline that you can achieve all your goals but still fail is an interesting one.
