After five and a half years of National Socialism it was evident to the few Germans who opposed Hitler that only the Army possessed the physical strength to overthrow him. The workers, the middle and upper classes, even if they had wanted to, had no means of doing it. They had no organization outside of the Nazi party groups, and they were, of course, unarmed.

True that. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is pretty much the benchmark for the history of WWII Germany. It's a long read but I got through it about 25 or so years ago. It has lots of neat pictures too.

I can say I'm a surgeon because I clip my own fingernails, but that does not make it so...

One he researched and wrote "Rise and Fall" he became a historian. And based upon his work he is a "thorough and competent" historian. It makes no difference if he ran a candy store by profession.

By the same token if YOU were to perform surgery (even if you were not a surgeon by trade or even trained) you would in fact be a surgeon. If you were good at it, you'd actually be a good surgeon.
