I'm looking at a black one. 351 Cobra Jet. Interior, suspension, motor and bay is all done. Just some body work and paint left. No rust.


*EDIT* Any body guys out there that wouldn't mind looking at a few photos and give their opinion of what I'm in for? PM Please.

I have owned a few over the years. They are fun cars but heavy pigs. They were body on frame starting with 1972. I have owned C6 and 4 speed models. The best gears you could get at the time was 3.50s. Many had 3.25s. They should have offered 3.91s as an option. I had one 4 speed 3.50 geared car. It came with a factory dual point distributor. So far as I know the C6 cars came with a single point distributor.
I still have an original 4 speed (and bellhousing/flywheel) from one if anyone is interested. They had a longer tailshaft/tailhousing than the Mustang did.
That is one car I would do a 400 or 429/460 upgrade to if I were interested in real performance.

You could simply set the original smog engine aside in case you ever wanted to sell the car and concentrate on building a more fun car for you to enjoy now.

Rhetorical question is rhetorical..
You can't compare that limited production car (92 cars) or the Thunderbolt, etc which was/were only sold to racing teams with a regular production option found in 4 different car/truck platforms and available to anyone fortunate enough to check the axle ratio box of 3.91, 4.11 or 4.30.
So to answer your question, yes a very lightweight dedicated factory drag race car would be quicker than the 429SCJ cars... Most people are no nearer to affording them now than their fathers or (great) grandfathers could afford them in the 60s.

Still working on the wife It requires body work so I'm contemplating the investment. I was looking for a car with a solid body since I have confidence on the mechanical side l but this one has that stuff done. I've only seen it in photos. It's about 4 hours away and haven't had the time to get up to see it in the flesh.

I know body work costs are regional, but it's been hard for me to estimate it. Any good body guys I could send some pics to?

Got the data plate info. Looks original as could be. It has a Special Order code so i ordered a Basic Marti to see what it says.

Always was one of my favorite cars from childhood on but, kinda partial to the Rancheroooo.

I like Rancheros also. I towed my Capri from California to Wisconsin with one when I got out of the Marine Corps. I can tell you that anyone who says a 351C has no torque on the street is full of shit. It was an early 1971 so it had the M code Cleveland 4V and a C6 with 3.50 gears. With the closed chamber heads, I had no detonation issues.

I'm a former paint and body guy. Be prepared for most shops to just run you off with astrinomical prices. Most shops only want insurance work, and new body panels to replace said rust with if they are willing to do the work. Good luck finding new or excellent used panels for a Torino. Everything will have to be hand made. Not a cheap option.

Im seriously thinking about picking one up or even a Torino GT (yeah the 390 isn't exactly spectacular but its still nice). My best friend's Dad had one (Torino Cobra) when we were growing up, they're fantastic looking in person.

The 68-69 Fairlanes and Torinos were lighter than the 70-71 models. The 390 cars had plenty of potential. With 427 lb ft of torque, they were no slouch. A 390 is stupid easy to make over 400HP.

Even my little 302 powered Capri has made believers out of many Brand X owners...

There was an episode of Pickers this weekend where they bought a '67 Torino GT with a high performance 390GT motor and a 4 speed. Those guys were creaming over it.
