The automotive website Edmunds says the average transaction price for a new vehicle, what consumers actually paid dealers, in December hit an all-time high of $37,260, an increase of $6,598 from December 2010. As a result of the higher prices, the average new vehicle auto loan in the fourth quarter climbed more than $600 to $31,722, according to Experian.
Not only are consumers borrowing more to pay for a new vehicle, they are also making higher monthly loan payments. Experian says the average monthly payment for a new vehicle hit a record high of $545, up $30 from a year earlier. That increase is driving up interest in used vehicles, which sell at a far lower price and typically carry a lower monthly payment. View Quote |

Screw buying a brand new car. It's idiocy unless you have a big stash of cash and nothing to waste it on.

Average purchase price: $37,260
Average auto loan: $31,722 Assuming cash buyers aren't factored into the "loan" average, people are putting $5500+ down on average. I'm skeptical. Maybe those rolling over massive negative equity help balance things out. |

I bought my first vehicle new in 1979. It was. CJ-5 and I ordered it to my taste. I was 22 yrs old. My parent went with me to pick it up from dealership. Didn't dawn on me the new vehicle sticker was on window. My dad commented I paid more for that jeep than they paid for the house and small acreage they lived on at the time.
That Jeep was a whopping $9,800.00. My insurance payment per month was almost as much as the Jeep loan. Man have times changed. |

Barring a lottery win, I will live my life having never owned a New Vehicle. And at this point, retiring next year, I will never again have a car payment.
Cash for lightly used cars. The newest car I have ever bought was 17 months old. Guess I'm poor. |

According to the inflation calculator over at www.saving.org, $37,260 today is the equivalent of $32,027 in 2010.
That means inflation accounted for $5,233 of the $6,598 increase between 2010 and today. Adjusted for inflation, the cost of a new car has gone up $1,365 (In 2010 dollars.) The actual cost of a car didn't go up that much, but the average equipment packaged into one got a lot better. |

Most expensive vehicle I ever bought was $15K
I have always had reliable vehicles that have never let me down. People who buy new cars and make payments = stupid IMO My winter beater I have been driving daily since October and have had for 3 years cost me $1900 and I have put less than $1k into it in small repairs and that includes a new set of tires. I rest my case. Insurance is cheap. If I scratch it.. don't care. If I wreck it into a ditch... no big deal. |

My car payment has been $0.00/month for the last 7 or 8 years.
My kids have college funds(hopefully they go) My 401k is more kick ass than people 20 years older than me(I’m 40) |

Nowadays I cant bring myself to go above 200. It actually gives me anxiety thinking about a payment more than about that.

It was for 5 years and I paid in 3. Total interest was like $500. I thought it was worth $500 to get to keep the $10,000. Now if you have a 0% loan it make the argument for payments even stronger. |

How much of that increase in cost is government?
CAFE, NHTSB, EPA etc.. Cars are about 75% government mandate these days. |

I try to keep my payment under 1K/month. I do pay them off as quickly as possible
|
|
Is that all?
Mine was about $1,000 a month, had it on a 36 month loan, it's been paid off for over two years now. I had the money to pay cash for it, a new truck, didn't want to turn down a no interest 36 month loan. |

I witness this shitshow on a daily basis.
Lakisha comes in to upgrade to a new small to mid size SUV cause she has 2 kids now and hubby and mother doesnt fit in a small sedan. Lakisha works at a retail store as a cashier and makes 10.50 an hour. She doesnt have any money down and doesnt want payment to be more than 500 a month for a $35000 car (lmao) and 14000 upside down. After a long day and 95% of banks rejecting her loan we finally get her approval at 12% besides shitty credit and her mother as a co signer. Her payment are $995. |
|
I hate knowing that buying a new vehicle is one of the worst things I can do with money I earn.
But, dang, i sure do enjoy my truck. |
|
|
I'm confused though because candy bars and just about everything else costs multiple times what it used to as well. So are folks borrowing more money or is the money that they are borrowing worth less necessitating more of it?
