Why would you put that much effort into a single engine Cessna sim?

To talk to ATC.
There is a huge community of Flight Sim guys around the world, and many of them are out there acting as ATC.
He's not talking to a computer, he's probably talking to another human being who could be half way around the world.

He is not talking to ATC. He is flying into uncontrolled airports making self announcements on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency. But.. People are nuts

You're probably right, I just skimmed the video.
But the guys building flight sims like this one, are definitely networking with guys that do ATC-Sim, live.

Easily attainable for the home sim enthusiast that wants to take it to the next level

What, 25 switches/controls to hook up?  Can simulate most gauges on the one screen
Fits in a spare bedroom if you were so inclined and never wanted to get laid, ever
Could probably get a cockpit shell semi locally from someone disposing of some junk that's been rotting on a ramp for the past decade for a few hundred and haul it with a small trailer vs trying to get a jet cockpit from some outfit in the desert

I've looked into some of those home cockpit sims simply because I was curious as to how it was done.  That's some seriously complex shit with significant logistical challenges.  One guy I read about was putting together a B737 sim and ended up having to buy a yoke from some guy in France.

In that case, isn't that the point of a sim? To practice for real world situations? It's kinds like dry firing I suppose.

A sim is hundreds of dollars cheaper per hour to fly than wet hours in a 172.

That is hardcore awesome! Any way to swap out for a Fighter jet HOTAS, and manual side throttle so you can play a mean game of Mechwarrior like the old Tesla pod we had at Dave and Busters?

That is a glorious set up!

If he was in a high wing with a low wing above him it would be nice if they were squawking to each other. GA crashes happen all the time due to stuff like that. Anything that improves situational awareness helps.

Because it is .

2. Probably just as fun
3. 0% chance of dying

Damn that's cool. For the money spent he prob coulda got a used Cessna though. I flew one a few times in high school through a class they had. Shoulda got my pilots license, very liberating being in the air in a small plane.

Especially without being able to put anything in the logbook, yeah.  I'm not ever inclined to go all out on a single aircraft simpit so I keep mine generic and utilitarian.

But the folks that think this is more than a $10k build are misestimating.

Yeah, I've never really gotten that.

This is my pit based on an A-10C. Not anywhere near that level, but quite functional. The Cessna parts are readily available to build a pit for the most part, the most impressive part is his screen setup, which I assume it a dome with a projector or three.

I guess I need to build a simulated airline crew room, and outfit it with 5 years of olde tyme Jepp updates, the crew room incessant bitcher, the loud guy in the sleep room, an eagle-eyed doucher assistant chief pilot looking for uniform violations, and some senior captain MEC member wondering why all of the junior pilots are grumbling assholes while he sucks every decent trip out of open time to pay his three alimony checks.

Mine's a little more basic than that.  As an aside, what'd you do to make your gear lever?  That's been a nut I haven't been able to crack.

DCS/P3D on the Oculus is simply incredible. There's no other words to describe it as most everyone who's shared the experience is left speechless. That's not to say it's perfect, not by any stretch. The implementation is basic and strapped with its own unique set of limitations. However, it's still fledgling and the potential these devices are capable of has yet to be reached.

Oh and since this is now a show your simpit thread I might as well contribute:

i lost myself in the jane's f-15E and f-18E sims some years back.  the main hornet consultant to the software developers constantly used to laugh at the guys who simulated in civilian airplanes.

"if you're going to sim something, why not sim the fun stuff, like blowing shit up?  who in their right minds spends their recreational time learning how to do procedure turns and tuning VORs?"

i laughed right along, but years later i wound up buying MSFS like everyone else.  the day i caught myself pricing out actual jeppesen approach plates so that i could 'fly' into new and different airports, i uninstalled and swore never to do it again.
