Texas Officer Shot, Suspect Dead

Sherman, TX -- A Frisco police officer was shot Tuesday in downtown Sherman while trying to arrest a murder suspect. That suspect, Charles Anthony Owen, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside an apartment at 224 N Travis Street.
Frisco detective Leah Apple was rushed to Wilson N. Jones Medical Center and underwent surgery. At last check she was in stable condition. Police say she and other officers were approaching the Travis Street Lofts when Owen fired at them from a 3rd story window. Apple was hit in the abdomen and hip. ouch! colastamy bag from now on...
Sherman officers, along with federal and state authorities, worked with hostage negotiators to bring Owen out. But they had little success, and finally stormed the building around 8:15pm. They fired several canisters of tear gas, but when they reached the room, Owen was already dead. Police say it appears he had been dead for several hours, but was heavily armed.
The Sherman school district also locked down all their buildings until well after school was supposed to let out.
Earlier in the day, an unidentified detective in the Grayson County Sheriff's Office suffered a heart attack during the standoff. He's recovering in the ICU of Wilson N Jones.
Leah Apple has been with the Frisco Police Department since March of 2002. Detective Apple began her career as a police officer and was transferred to the Criminal Investigations Division about 6 months ago.
