looks like he's following in mayor daley's footsteps.

The seeing in to homes thing probably falls under the standard 'in plain view' policy though.

But this: "I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Deserves a big F-U to the chief.

"I know a lot of people are concerned about Big Brother, but my response to that is, if you are not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it?" Chief Harold Hurtt told reporters Wednesday at a regular briefing.

Yup.

[hypothetical conversation]

Well, if that's the case Chief then I don't suppose you mind if you become the first one to have a camera installed? What? Why are you objecting so much? You just said that if you're not doing anything wrong, why should you worry about it? Oh, you meant to say if OTHER PEOPLE aren't, not people like yourself.

[/hypothetical conversation]

I swear to God if the people that wrote laws and came up with ideas like this bullshit had no choice but to be treated EXACTLY like the sheep that they foist this crap on we'd see about 90% of the laws, rules and regs on the books overturned in the next 10 days.

Half of me thinks it's bullshit and doesn't want to believe that a Texan would say something like this. The other half of me remembers some of the shit that I've heard Texans say.

Harold Hurtt is an Arizonan. NOT a Texan.

Ha Ha.

How are y'all going to bash Texas or ANY poster on ARFCOM over the shit this jackass says?

I'm confused here? Just what does a story about ONE idiot police chief in the Houston area "validate"?

+1.

I'm confused about that too.

Add me to the list of people confused as to how statements by this guy say ANYTHING about posters on arfcom.

I have something you could shove up your ass if you think I'll be installing cameras for the government to inspect at it's request.

Christ! I was called a tin-foil head for even suggesting government might one-day seek to require such a thing.

Amazing

Hurtt is an ass.

He's just another liberal politically correct appointee.

The guy denied that Houston's huge crime increase late last year had ANYTHING to do with the influx of NOLA vermin residents.

It wasn't until about a month ago that he just couldn't deny it anymore and had to admit it.

Interesting theory.
Perhaps, true as well.

He's trying to make a point about the response that California members get when a California lawmaker starts talking about guns.
Right, Paul?

Correct.

Well that explains it. Thanks.

FWIW, Bill White should be removed from office for appointing this socialist Arizona asshat as Chief of Police.

And I'd LOVE to see this guy actually TRY to put surveillance cameras inside private residences, or even rental apartments. News flash? It ain't gonna happen.

Yes, it will.
Far too many people agree with the "if you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear"
Kinda like DUI checkpoints.

AA, I'm reading that as the homowner is the victim, not a perp.

Maybe...

Couple of things to remember.
1) Houston/Swamp City/Mosquitoville is rapidly becoming Detroit. They can't even have a little commuter choo-choo without the locals running into/under it all the time. Even more irionic given that the city seal has a little choo-choo right on it.
2) This is the city that gave us Lee Brown, Tootsie, and Lil Chief Bitsy (ask Austin how much they liked her when she was done with Houston) who eliminated half of all crime in Houston in ONE night.
3) I don't think that Chief Hurtt comes form Houston, like many cities they hire some PC beaurocrat who farts IACOP mantra.
4) The chief of HPD said this, not Texas as a whole. He's been pretty well laughed at across the state on this, not to mention in his own town. I don't think the mayor is real high on this. About the only guy who is even more laughable is Governor Goodhair, the male cheerleader from A&M.
5) Chiefs have a habit of saying really stupid things, like the Chief of Dallas PD declaring that all crime was due to people not parking in their garages. I'm serious, he actually said that.
There is a reason (a whole lot actually) I left Humidity City after being the third generation in my family born there.

Come stick a camera in my house.

It will make everyone so paranoid, they won't do anything but sit on the sofa.
Which is good, because almost everything these days is a crime.
When you run out of criminals, just create more.

This azzhat is simply wanting it to look like he is accomplishing something.

As I recall....The local news here recently reports murder is up 27%, we have 1800+ felons that cannot be accounted for, the city cops are well behind the manpower requirements they need and they cannot recruit qualified candidates.

Darn near everyday they report on murders and school riots involving our 54,000 new residents we picked up from NOLA after Katrina. Still have a bunch of them left here.

The two or three apartment buildings in my nieghborhood keep probably a dozen cops tied up every shift.

IMHO ....This chief is just trying to save his job. Cameras are the path of least resistance for Chief to look like he is doing his job. This is bullsh!t.

Deterrance. Recording of crimes for use in investigations.

Not being a jerk but...
Deterance through video only comes from the possible punishment after capture, trial, & conviction. If that even happens at all. Though to your point, most criminals are lazy & they would have to take into account a disguise or some manner of disabling the camera.

And after seeing what some people do when they know they're being recorded I don't see how this will prevent a crime from happening. I do see an increase in sales of ski masks though.

That what you mean? You're right.
We see that in Britain, where they rely upon the camera as a magic bullet, but crime has gone up and they don't understand why.

Do the technological innovations of "mask", "balaclava" or “disguise” exist there I wonder?

Nah. NO one is gonna accept a surveillance camera in their house, because the goobermint said so. People are stupid, but they're not THAT stupid.

"No one is gonna accept having to take their shoes off before they are allowed on an airplane"
Just give it time.

It's Houston. Houston, Dallas, and Austin have been annexed by the "big city" and aren't really part of Texas anymore.

These guys can go fuck themselves. I don't want some police officer watching me and my wife in or around our house. This stuff will be used more for abuse than for community service, mark my words. Pony up and hire more police officers.

The fact that it seems I meet more transplants in Dallas than natives has me wondering. I think Texas needs to put boarder patrol on all our boarders.
